What can we learn about wellbeing from a burnt-out ER doctor? The lesson is this: you only have power when you let go of control. Kat Moore ran an ICU and was continually frustrated. It was understaffed, underfunded and badly managed. She worked tirelessly to make it better. It wasn't until she realised she couldn't, in fact, control the environment she worked in that she found the power to be an effective doctor and a good colleague. Listening to her, I instantly recognised what she was saying becuase I see the same thing happening with women and their wellbeing. When we set out to fix what's wrong: Control what we eat. Manage our weight. All from a position of making things better than they are, it most often ends in frustration, overwhelm and a sense of failure. Then, instead of realising that control doesn't work, we try harder. We start again on Monday. We make a different lifestyle change. We omit that food group. We fast for this period of time. We join that gym. It wasn't until Kat, the doctor, let go of trying to fix everything that was broken she could be more effective. It is entirely possible for women to stop trying to control how their bodies look and manage their diets and - they will find power when they do. - They stand up for themselves. - Have conversations with partners and bosses and health providers they never had the courage to have. This is an important thing for all leaders to remember, when women have power over their wellbeing, their ability to take care of themselves becomes natural. They have unexpected energy.
