It’s troubling that so much of the national conversation focuses on political arguments about who’s right or wrong—left or right—when there’s a far more urgent issue at hand. How is it that a powerful nation like the United States leads the world in school shooting deaths? After hundreds of students, teachers, and staff have lost their lives in a place where they should feel safe, how do we continue to accept this tragic reality? Schools are meant to protect and nurture, yet we send children there without guaranteeing they’ll return home. Parents now face the terrifying reality of hoping their kids will survive the school day. While politicians enjoy the security and protection they’ve put in place for themselves, why aren't they taking stronger action to protect the most vulnerable among us—our children? How many more lives must be lost before we prioritize the safety of students and make real, lasting changes? The ongoing inaction raises questions about the true priorities of those in power and whether protecting lives is at the top of their agenda. #StopSchoolViolence

Very concerning. Cases like these are often settled after a law suit. So many lessons to consider as Michael Dorn shared HR screening us critical. In addition to that what is your training and professional development regarding safety, prevention, intervention and reporting include? Can you as a Superintendent defend what you have in place? Are you settling under the table and hoping the media doesn’t spiral to a major crisis? Let’s establish and build a comprehensive and defensible strategy backed by experts to protect students with something you can defend. As a district there is a standard of care when it comes to best practices you should have had in place when an employee behaves violently or inappropriately. These types of incidents are always troubling, even more so when the school employee carries out a mass casualty shooting or as in a case in Vietnam, when a school administrator threw battery acid on multiple of his coworkers. While, there are limits to reliability, there are preemployment screening and post-hire practices that can reduce the risk of violence by school employees. The severe challenges in recruiting and retaining high-quality school employees and the lack of proper consequences for violent behaviors of students in some schools and districts can also increase by staff and students. As with law enforcement personnel, these types of excessive force and in even rarer cases, assaultive behavior are atypical of how most personnel conduct themselves. As with medical doctors, lawyers, university faculty and many others in various professions, a very small percentage employees in any field are capable of extreme acts of violence. What is important is how organizations work to try to prevent them, how they prepare people to react to then should they occur, recovery strategies and how the organization handles these types of incidents. #schoolsafety #schoolbusviolence #schoolsecurity #schoolsuperintendents #sro
