I'm not sure whether my little experiment to identify people that might be interested in studying for a PhD in Quantum technology worked or not. Having posted an outline asking people that were interested in being considered for the scholarships to have an informal chat, I ended up with dozens of CVs and more connection requests than I can count. Having read a lot of the submitted CVs I have come to the conclusion that it is too easy for people to respond to advertised opportunities with a generic CV, rather than paying attention to what the opportunity is and showing how their particular skills and experience match what is being asked for. In this instance, none of the CVs I have read so far have shown anything that is relevant to Quantum Technology. I also note that a lot of the CVs I have read are not high quality. If you are looking for a position, whether it is in industry or in academia, please take a little while to think what the recruiter is looking for and make it clear how you fit in with their expectations. If you are sending the same CV that has not worked a dozen times, is it really going to work this time? Also, not wanting to sound grumpy, but nobody has actually answered the exam question. The request was for interested people to drop me a line so it was possible to discuss what I am looking for, as outlined in the original post.

At H Squared Talent, we focus on a niche that's often overlooked but bursts with innovation and groundbreaking discoveries. Our focus is connecting talented people with roles in companies that design and manufacture scientific or high-tech equipment. Some of these companies may be small in size, but their impact on the world of science and technology is monumental. What makes this niche so thrilling is the chance to work with some of the brightest minds in physics, chemistry, and engineering. These are people who aren't just working jobs - they're pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. Whether it's helping scientists at CERN classify new elements using advanced crystallography techniques or supporting engineers developing instruments to detect particles like dark matter, we're proud to play a part in these revolutionary projects. What sets us apart is how much we embrace this world. We don't just match candidates to roles - we immerse ourselves in the challenges and breakthroughs that define this sector. For us, it's more than recruitment. It's about contributing to a community of innovators who are reshaping the way we understand the universe - and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Universities are such complex (and a little bit bonkers) places - the range of careers and the ability to chart out a trajectory that builds great careers are often unseen by students and postdocs. This looks like an interesting project that will shine a light on "the dark side" (as it was called by my boss as I moved into professional services!). I look forward to the results. Links very nicely to the Higher Education Policy Institute report on third space professionals - the raft of roles between research and professional services. https://lnkd.in/ejCDn6Tw Did I mention unis are super complex?
Interested to explore the career trajectories of those who are/were researchers and have stayed in the Higher education sector? We’re hiring a research associate to assist us with our project on exploring this, showcasing the diverse opportunities available to researchers. Deadline to apply: 26th August 2024. If #SheldonCooper was your hiring manager I’d imagine his job description would look and sound like this 👇🏼😅😆🤣 Position Available: Most Important Job in the Universe (Clearly the Most Important Role in the Universe 😆) Greetings, future colleague! If you are reading this, congratulations on recognizing the brilliance of this opportunity. Allow me to elucidate. We at Cooper Inc. are seeking an exceptional individual to join our ranks as a Physicist Extraordinaire. To be clear, we are not looking for just anyone. Mediocrity is not an option. If your skills are merely “adequate,” I kindly suggest you pursue a career in, oh, I don’t know, interpretive dance. Your Responsibilities (aka What You’ll Do While I’m Busy Being Brilliant): • Engage in highly intricate tasks such as which I am certain will push your intellectual limits. • Collaborate with a team of individuals who are almost as intelligent as I am—an impressive feat, I assure you. • Solve complex problems that might confuse lesser minds but will surely delight your superior intellect. Qualifications (The Bar Is Set High, Obviously): • A degree in Biochemistry, preferably from an institution ranked in the top 10% of the top 1% worldwide. • Mastery of physics and I do mean mastery, not “I took an online course once.” • An innate ability to grasp concepts that others struggle to comprehend. (In simpler terms: You must be as smart as I am. Or close. Very close.) • A deep love for science and the capacity to explain it without using emojis. Perks (Besides Working With Me, Of Course): • Competitive salary and benefits that are satisfactory for an individual of your caliber. • Access to resources that will make you feel like Tony Stark, minus the suit. • Occasional opportunities to debate scientific theories, preferably ones that I am destined to win. Application Instructions (Because You Need Guidance): Submit your resume and a cover letter detailing why you are the Leonard to our Sheldon. Include examples of your intellectual prowess, preferably with references who will testify to your unparalleled genius. Apply now, and perhaps, if you are fortunate, you will join us in reshaping the universe—or at least our corner of it. Warm regards (but not too warm), Dr. Sheldon Cooper…err #TooFunny #RecruiterLife #Reshare #LinkedIn #BigBangTheory

Seems to be a discrepancy recently around what a hiring company want/need, and what those specific people want/need as their next step. I’m seeing an increase in scientists not applying or even rejecting offers as the work is too similar to what they’ve done before. They’re the perfect candidate, and that makes it less attractive to them. For companies developing quantum technologies, the requirements were a lot looser 2-3 years ago than they are now – which means the scientists who joined were capable AND likely picking up something new. Now the requirements are tight, the bar for hiring is higher – but to those passing the test, what will they learn in the new role? Probably worth keeping in mind when you’re hiring. #quantumtechnology #quantumcomputing #recruitment
