According to the CDC, in the U.S., Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. The CDC notes that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. Held annually on April 11-17th, Black Maternal Health Week is a week-long campaign founded and led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people. Community Health Centers like Dimock are working hard to eliminate this disparity and improve maternal health outcomes for Black mothers. To learn more or support Dimock in these efforts to increase health equity in our community, visit dimock.org/give #BMHW24 #BlackMamasMatter #MaternalJustice #BMHW

On World Elder Abuse Day, we are united against the abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people. In 2023, Relationships Australia NSW conducted a research study to understand NSW's response to the abuse of older people in our state. With the NSW Ageing & Disability Commissioner, we convened a Roundtable event and brought together key stakeholders in this area and as a result of this collaboration, we were proud to release our Policy Agenda 👉https://bit.ly/3yB6dMP Our Agenda outlines ambitious but realistic measures for the government to fulfil by 2030: 🔵Strengthen the NSW service system 🔵Consider legislative reform 🔵Build a resilient workforce 🔵Leverage data for innovation Together, we can end the abuse of older people in our state. The Grassroots Maternal and Child Health Initiative is proud to support @CHC: Creating Healthier Communities as they disseminate the Black Birthing Initiative needs assessment survey. The Black Birthing Initiative aims to reduce preterm births in Black communities across the country: Black women are 50% more likely to deliver a premature baby than white women in the United States. I'm currently enrolled in a class that shed light on how older adults are often marginalized in our society. Ageism is real, and it's time we advocate for the rights and dignity of our seniors. Let's raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and stand up against age discrimination. Remember, advocating for the elderly is as crucial as any other social cause. Together, let's foster a society that values and respects every age. "As we grow older, we don't lose the fire; we accumulate the ashes of experience. These ashes become the fuel for wisdom, igniting a flame that lights the path of the third age, where every step is a story and every wrinkle a chapter written with grace and resilience." I'm working on a class Eldercare project and will post my work here when completed. It will focus on how social isolation effects the physical and mental wellbeing of our older adult population. #MethodistMedic #AgeismAwareness #AdvocateForSeniors #InclusiveSociety #MentalHealthAdvocate #Eldercare #SocialIsolation #MethodistUniversityFayetteville #AdvancedParamedicineBachelors

July is National Minority Health Awareness Month. Did you know that according to SAMHSA, treatment rates vary significantly by race and ethnicity: - White individuals receive treatment 23.5% of the time. - Black individuals receive treatment 18.6% of the time. - Hispanic individuals receive treatment 17.6% of the time. With these statistics in mind, we need to stop the stigma and support equitable access to treatment and support for all. #MinorityHealth #EndTheStigma #StoptheStigma #recovery #recoveryispossible

✊🏽 It's National Community Health Center Week and today we are talking about how racism makes us sick. While race itself doesn’t determine health, experiencing racism profoundly impacts it. This can be as personal as someone receiving poor medical care from a racist provider, or as systemic as entire structures that treat people of color poorly. Racism is so connected to health that it can be deadly: The maternal death rate among Black Americans is 2.6 times higher than for White Americans. Our Priscilla Project doulas protect Black and Brown people giving birth, both in Buffalo and in our clinics in the DRC, Sierra Leone, and Nepal. The narratives we repeat, the segregation we enforce, and the way we respond to harm, all affect our health. History is repeating itself, often under new names and disguises. We must tell the truth about our racist past if we hope to create a future where everyone is healthy and whole. ❤️ #NationalCommunityHealthCenterWeek #RacismAndHealth #HealthEquity #CommunityHealth #JerichoRoad #PriscillaProject
