Landing a Venture Capital job is notoriously challenging. There are few open positions in VC, and many are not advertised. Aspiring VCs struggle to get in the hiring process, prepare for interviews, and nail the case study. I talked to Felix Li, recently confirmed in a full-time position at the esteemed Luxemburg-based fund Mangrove Capital Partners, about his journey from a VC internship to a VC job. In our conversation, Felix addresses various topics crucial for anyone looking to break into Venture Capital—including understanding the nuances of the recruiting process, what it’s like to work in Venture Capital, and, importantly, how to best prepare for a career in this challenging yet rewarding industry. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ewzTihc3 #venturecapital #vcjob #vcinternship

🔔 VC 🟰 industry of warm intros. Meagan Loyst is flipping the script; here’s why it matters 👇 → Many VCs will not look at a deal or candidate that does not come from an intro. To date, this system has exasperated the resource divide for countless founders and emerging fund managers. ➡️ Here are the problems spelled out: 1. Most people do not know a single investor, let alone a Venture Capitalist. 2. A system where you need to have raised money to raise money is paradoxical. 3. Stanford and Harvard represent a mere fraction of our population, yet 40% of all Venture Capitalists. 4. Emerging managers are evaluated based on historical performance & amount they have personally invested into their funds. 💡In short, our system is excellent at empowering UHNWI as VCs while significantly poorer at finding the best candidates regardless of socioeconomic status. ➡️ Here is how Meagan Loyst is flipping the script. 1. Founded Gen Z VCs as an open-access community for those interested in Venture. 2. Has used her platform to support first-generation and diverse next-generation leaders. 3. Focuses on sharing her passion and joy rather than raw analytics—inspiring more people to get educated on venture. 4. While attending Oxford and building a killer platform, she has maintained her values, continuously committing to making venture and, thereby, innovation accessible to a broader audience. At Moonarch we have the privilege of working with many of the world's top VCs. → We are here to report that the work of folks like Meagan Loyst and Sophie Beren to bring GenZ front and center is being noticed.🌟 How do you think GenZ will change the way Venture is conducted? If you're hiring an analyst, associate, or intern at your VC fund... please reach out to me! I've been building a resume book of top candidates & would love nothing more than to make high quality intros 💫 Gen Z VCs is all about making Tech/VC more accessible to the next generation, and that starts with assuring top candidates (regardless of background, education, etc.) are seen by top funds for entry level roles. 4 examples: 💼 Julia Pardee & Sofia Guzowski lead Gen Z VCs' Job Board and have helped our community facilitate 10,000+ applications into Tech/VC entry level roles... and we're just getting started! 💫 New Enterprise Associates (NEA) has a paid fellowship for undergraduate students kicking off in the spring (applications close in 2 days!), and we've made nearly 20 referrals of top potential candidates from schools all over the country (not just target schools). 💡 I will often use my socials & the community to crowdsource candidates for firms hiring based on their criteria... have done this for Red Sea Ventures, TCV, and several other funds. Earlybird Venture Capital posted an open Analyst Intern role in London yesterday, and after posting it in the Gen Z VCs London chat, we referred a top candidate in MINUTES. ❤️ From our recently launched Gen Z VCs Fellowship, we've just seen several incredible candidates ranging from undergraduates to recent grads a few years out of school... and we've already have made intros to top funds from seed to growth (4 funds just this week). Oh and by the way, we do this completely for free. I make time because it's important. To change the terrible statistics in our industry (ie: % of female founders getting funded, % of diverse GPs in VC, etc.)... it starts at the beginning & with the people writing checks. So again, here's my ask. If you're hiring for any entry level roles in VC (analysts, associates, interns, fellows, scouts, etc.)... please reach out to me ❤️ #venturecapital #vcfunding #diversity #genz #genzinvestors #vc #vcs #nextgen #hiring #recruiting #analyst #analystjobs #associate

Are you a high school or college student interested in Venture Capital? To become a venture capitalist, we can learn from LinkedIn profiles. The experience sections of current VC analysts and investors display the following commonalities: 🏫 1) Education: These analysts completed their undergraduate degrees at top-notch institutions known for academic rigor and intellectual curiosity. Beyond simply earning a degree, these analysts likely pursued challenging coursework, engaged in extracurricular activities, and cultivated strong relationships with professors. Such experiences not only demonstrate a commitment to learning but also the ability to excel in competitive environments, a vital trait in the fast-paced world of venture capital. 💼 2) Previous VC Internships: Internships provide invaluable hands-on experience and insights into the workings of the venture capital industry. Sourcing internships, for instance, involve identifying potential investment opportunities, conducting market research, and evaluating startups' viability. On the other hand, finance and accounting internships offer exposure to financial modeling, due diligence processes, and portfolio management. Each type of internship contributes to a well-rounded understanding of venture capital operations and hones specific skill sets essential for success in the field. 👩💻 3) Fellowship Experience: Fellowships backed by VC firms offer unparalleled access to industry professionals. Through these programs, aspiring venture capitalists can immerse themselves in the ecosystem, gaining exposure to deal flow, investment strategies, and networking opportunities. 📈 4) School Clubs: Participation in Student Investment Funds or PE/VC Case Teams simulate real-world investment scenarios. Valuable experiences include conducting market research and financial analysis to presenting investment recommendations. 📲 5) Founders: Experiencing firsthand the challenges and triumphs of building a startup, students gain insight into the intricacies of the entrepreneurial journey. This empathy and understanding not only enhance investors' ability to assess startup potential but also foster stronger relationships with founders, as they recognize the shared experiences and mutual goals driving both parties. To summarize: you need to do the job before the job. Whether you choose to build a startup, invest in your school's fund, or join a VC fellowship, all of these experiences can build your repertoire as an aspiring venture capitalist. #venturecapital #girlsintovc

The #proptech jobs market has reached global scale. However, as macroeconomic conditions continue to play out in Q1 2024, the fragility of the sector is beginning to show with regional variability in entry-level hiring and shift towards senior leadership hires. In fact, a large portion of new hires across all regions are for senior roles, with Director and Executive positions constituting over 80% in the EMEA, approximately 82% in AMER, and 71% in APAC. This highlights a strategic emphasis on leadership and experience over entry-level or internship positions. Landing a job in #venturecapital is notoriously tough, and it’s usually not a straight route for an undergrad. Investment banking is the first step, and for decades, gaining employment has followed a strict cycle. Investment banks recruit for their rising senior year internship class when the students are sophomores — undergrads typically sign a full-time offer before they’ve even turned the tassel. Like all savvy business leaders, Marshall and its Trojan Network are hoping to capitalize on the emerging trend by creating a pool of prepared and highly motivated undergraduates interested in investing.
