🍟 Regulation and risks of food products Over 90 years have passed since the House of Lords’ ruling in Donoghue v. Stevenson, and the obligations on manufacturers to produce food products that are safe for human consumption have become ever more prevalent as time has gone on. In this article, Samantha Silver, Emilie Civatte, LL.M. and Paula Margolis of Kennedys consider several factors affecting food safety, the risks arising from them, and how, and to what extent, these factors shape the current and future regulatory landscape in the EU and UK post-Brexit. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eAHQxJSk #ProductLiability #FoodSafety

There is a noticeable gap between how consumers perceive food additives and the rigorous safety assessments they undergo in the EU. 📒 The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducts thorough evaluations and re-evaluations to ensure consumer safety, yet the public often remains skeptical. During the re-evaluation process, some adjustments have been made to the allowed levels or categories of certain additives, but very few have actually been banned. 🗞 Have you ever seen a headline about a food additive gaining approval for safety? Probably not. But likely you hear all about additives that are banned. This disconnect highlights the need for better communication. Risk assessment—whether for food, medicine, vaccines, or simple day to day tasks like crossing the street—can and should be explained in simpler terms. It affects nearly every aspect of our lives.

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have initiated a public consultation seeking opinions on two proposals aimed at modernising the authorisation process for regulated food and feed products. These changes are designed to streamline the system, offering quicker access to safe, innovative food choices for consumers and they will not compromise food standards or safety in any way. The proposed reforms include: 1. Removing the requirement for products already authorised as safe to undergo a fixed 10-year renewal, regardless of whether evidence on safety changes, reducing unnecessary strain on resources. 2. Simplifying the administrative procedure to authorise products, enabling quicker market entry following ministerial approval For more details and to participate, visit https://bit.ly/3J7eGcw The consultation is open until Wednesday 5 June 2024. #FoodSafety #FoodStandardsScotland

What is the difference between natural food and food approved by the top food safety institutions? Natural food is food that has minimal processing and no preservatives or artificial additives. Food approved by the top food safety institutions is food that meets certain standards and regulations, but may contain synthetic and artificial ingredients or additives. How can we trust these institutions when they may be compromised by money and corporate interests? How can we trust these companies when they may be harming our health and well-being for profit? Shouldn't food items with chemical elements be required to have a specific color label? This will reduce the long transportation of food items, create small industries and strengthen the rural economy. #ssjm #naturalproducts #naturalfoods #humanhealth World Health Organization United Nations United Nations - Youth Commentary FDA
