International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI)’s Post

Many challenges face Pacific Islands Small Developing States to effectively manage the ¼ of the world’s #coralreefs under their jurisdiction. The Pacific Island Coral Reef Action Plan sets out 8 key action areas where regional cooperation and international partnerships can support regional efforts to manage #threats to coral reefs. The action will galvanise #international science partners to share knowledge, resources and technology to avoid loss of this crucial marine biodiversity resource. #ForCoral Lead contact for the project is ICRI member Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration U.S. Department of State

The Pacific Coral Reef Collective facilitated by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority brought together reef managers and designated partners from 14 Pacific countries (SPREP Pacific Members) to address shared challenges facing coral reefs and explore the innovative solutions being implemented to improve reef resilience. Harnessing the power of the collective to share experiences, success stories and to progress future collaborative opportunities were a crucial part of the forum. The programs showcased on the Great Barrier Reef were mapped against action areas identified in the Pacific Coral Reef Action Plan.
