When ships trade across the ocean, they can introduce invasive aquatic species (IAS) to new marine environments, posing one of the greatest threats to the world’s freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems. Panama hosted a series of events for biofouling management specialists from Latin America and the Caribbean region (8-12 July), on how to mitigate the transfer of these invasive species via ships’ hulls or ballast water and how to help close the gender gap for women in biofouling. Today is international #mangroveday and we're happy to share with you a new report on carbon stock in mangrove ecosystem! Mangroves provide various ecosystem services, including coastal protection, fishery nursery habitats, and carbon sequestration. The potential of mangroves to store carbon is five times greater than that of tropical rainforests. The Subnational Climate Fund (SCF) Technical Assistance commissioned a study to evaluate carbon stock in Mangrove ecosystems in Central Kalimantan in #Indonesia. The report was written by EcoNusa Foundation and the Indonesian Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (CCMRS-IPB). Have you already seen the "State of West African marine protected areas" report? The report was launched this week at the Marine and Coastal forum in Bissau #FOMACO2024 This first edition provides data and analyses never brought together in a single work, on both the current situation of and common issues faced by all the MPAs in West Africa. These relate to #governance, #management, #financing, uses and threats such as #pollution, #extractive and oil industry projects as well as #climatechange. I was happy to co-author the chapter on Governance and #equity with Jennifer Kelleher with the contribution of Thierry Clement. Shout out to Tanya Merceron for leading on this, to the other editors Catherine Gabrié Francis Staub, Marie Suzanne TRAORE Taibou Bâ Thierry Clement and to the 60 co-authors. Enjoy the reading! By creating a #upcycled economy that turns Sargassum from waste to materials and products for local and global use, we are solving a key environmental catastrophe affecting communities in the Caribbean in a truly sustainable way. This is specially relevant as tropical and subtropical nations since they are particularly vulnerable to climate-related volatility and resource dependence. We are happy to announce that the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policies, Cecilie T. Myrseth, will join our panel for the Big Picture session "Navigating Arctic Realities." The session will delve into the dynamic landscape of Arctic shipping, exploring the imperative for alternative fuels and upgraded infrastructure to enhance efficiency and accommodate emerging ports and routes. With melting sea ice opening new passages, heightened geopolitical interests, and potential risks, there is an urgent need for international cooperation, robust maritime regulations, and advanced technologies to ensure safe navigation. Ms Myrseth has been a dedicated member of the Storting for Troms since 2017, before taking up the post a Minister in 2023. From 2015 to 2017, Myrseth assumed the role of chair of the Troms county cabinet. Our panelists will discuss what initiatives actively promote greener practices in Arctic shipping, and how sustainable practices and zero-emission technology are prioritized to balance economic interests and ecological preservation in the delicate Arctic region. 🚨Nature Paper alert 🚨 In this new piece we discuss how the new #HighSeas Treaty offers a unique opportunity to implement a #climatechange #conservation framework The #HighSeas (international waters) comprises two-thirds of the world’s ocean and only 1% is fully protected. The #HighSeas is essential to meeting the CBD targets of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030 (30x30) We suggest 3 steps that #HighSeas Treaty must take to address the impacts of climate change: 🌊 Partner with fisheries & global orgs to protect migratory species 🌐 Develop coordinated conservation strategies across nations 🔬 Boost scientific collaboration to model ocean ecosystem dynamics and species on the move Time's ticking! As nations rally behind the #HighSeas Treaty, we have a unique chance to protect our oceans from climate change. Let's make it count! 🌊⏰ #HighSeasTreaty #ClimateAction paper link: https://lnkd.in/gp3WrxJe

New report from the UNESCO Ocean 🚨 State of the Ocean Report 2024 underscores the severe problem of abandoned, lost, or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), which makes up a significant proportion of seafloor litter. Resqunit technology addresses this problem directly. As the first mass-produced solution, Resqunit helps prevent the loss of fishing gear, ensuring that our oceans remain cleaner and safer. Our innovative approach not only safeguards marine life but also supports sustainable fishing practices. #resqunit #unesco #oceandecade #fishresponsibly #stateoftheoceanreport #marinelitter #oceanconservation #fishinggear #ALDFG https://lnkd.in/eyJkA7Mm

Today, I had the honor of speaking at the Economic Committee of the Israeli Knesset about new regulations that prohibit dumping waste from vessels into the sea. These new regulations mark a significant step towards preventing marine pollution and preserving Israel's marine ecosystems. The primary objective of these regulations is to reduce marine pollution and safeguard the health of our marine environment and diverse marine life. According to the regulations, it is forbidden to discharge waste from vessels into the sea, thus ensuring a clean and healthy marine environment. I am proud to be part of the effort to preserve our marine environment and address the ongoing ecological challenge. I believe that through collective effort involving the public, government, and civil society, we can make positive changes and maintain a healthy environment for future generations. For more information and to watch the full broadcast of the discussion at the Economic Committee, you are invited to join the Knesset channel. #Environment #Knesset #Ecology #Monitoring #MarineProtection #EnvironmentalConservation #NewRegulations

The time to act is now. The call for ratifying the High Seas Treaty is more pressing than never before, as the threats to our oceans escalate each day. Being part of developing countries, SL has a great opportunity to show our leadership and interest in justice and capacity building through the High Seas Treaty. While 92 countries have signed the treaty so far, Let's hope SL will soon join in ratifying the treaty, displaying our commitment for marine conservation and sustainability 🙌 Sharing latest blog article on "How the High Seas Treaty Safeguards Our Oceans: Why Sri Lanka Should Lead the Way", written by me. #HighSeasTreaty #MarineProtection #SaveOurOceans #ClimateAction
