🎙️ Live Reading Series – Biostatistics Article 3: Prof. Konstantin Slavin reads aloud an article by Garston Liang, Quentin F. Gronau, and Alexander Thorpe which addresses the use of N-of-1 trials in neuromodulation and personalized medicine. N-of-1 trials are a powerful method for investigating treatment effects on an individual basis, making them ideal for patients with stable symptoms and chronic disorders. The article also highlights the statistical considerations for analyzing N-of-1 trials, emphasizing the importance of proper design and analysis to ensure valid conclusions. ✔️ YouTube video: https://lnkd.in/gG3U5b5w ✔️ Biostatistics articles on the INS website: https://lnkd.in/gtRmHVHT #biostatistics #statistics #neuromodualtion #INS #podcast

🎙️Live Reading Series – Biostatistics Article 1: Professor Konstantin Slavin reads aloud an article by Quentin F. Gronau, Garston Liang, and Alexander Thorpe that explores Bayes factors as an alternative to p-values for hypothesis testing. They explain how Bayes factors (BF10) measure evidence for an effect versus no effect, with BF10 greater than 1 indicating evidence for an effect, and BF10 less than 1 indicating evidence against it. The discussion highlights the advantages of Bayes factors, such as quantifying evidence for both the null and alternative hypotheses and allowing for continuous evidence monitoring. Using simple analogies, the article provides clear guidance on interpreting Bayes factors and address common misconceptions. ✔️ YouTube video: https://lnkd.in/g7kBaK77 ✔️Biostatistics articles on the INS website: https://lnkd.in/gtRmHVHT

#Statistics #Bayesian In practising medicine, physicians often face uncertainty in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy recommendations. Skilled physicians use probabilistic reasoning to navigate this uncertainty, progressively reducing it with accumulated information. Similarly, the Bayesian statistical framework views clinical research as a process of progressively reducing uncertainty about a hypothesis. While frequentist statistics, dominant in the 20th century, introduced concepts like p-values and confidence intervals, they often remain abstract and counterintuitive. Bayesian statistics, on the other hand, offers a more intuitive approach. It combines prior information with new data to update probabilities, providing a flexible and informative method for clinical research. Modern computing advancements have made Bayesian methods increasingly feasible in medical research. Bayesian analysis allows for a more nuanced understanding of clinical data, facilitating better design, analysis, and interpretation of clinical trials. This approach can sometimes yield markedly different conclusions from frequentist analysis, highlighting its potential to transform clinical research. Modern medicine is driven by data insights, and biostatistics is becoming increasingly essential for curing human illnesses. According to Associate Professor Tomohiro Shinozaki from the Department of Information and Computer Technology at TUS, tackling bias in observational studies that do not rely on experimental interventions is crucial. To this end, he studies statistical causal inference for combating biases, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3.
