Today is the International Day for the fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. It marks a global action against #IUUfishing which is estimated to account for about 20 percent of the world’s catch. It creates unfair competition with compliant fishers, threatening the #livelihoods of coastal communities. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing distorts competition and markets and undermines sustainability policies. It frequently involves harmful fishing methods, which severely damage #marineecosystems and can ruin fisheries management plans that rely on accurate knowledge of the status of marine resources. #ThrowbackThursday Recently, #ICSSeychelles participated in the National Plan of Action (NPOA)- Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing workshop, alongside stakeholders such as SFA, other government bodies, international stakeholders and other NGOs. IUU fishing activities violate both national and international fishing regulations and is found in all types and dimensions of fisheries; it occurs both on the #highseas and in areas within national jurisdiction. It is a global problem that threatens ocean ecosystems, sustainable fisheries, economic security and the natural resources that are critical to global food security. The workshop served as a crucial platform to collaborate with industry leaders, government officials, and experts, as we collectively addressed the pressing challenges posed by IUU fishing. Introducing the Tuna Transparency Pledge 🐟 - a new initiative by The Nature Conservancy to achieve 100% on-the-water monitoring on all industrial tuna vessels ⛴️ by 2027. Each year, tuna fisheries produce 5 million tons of fish, with a dockside value of $10 billion 💰. But a lack of transparency is threatening global seafood supply, harming coastal communities, and undermining marine conservation efforts 👎🏼. To protect fishers 🎣, coastal communities, and businesses (who all rely on healthy tuna fisheries), retailers, seafood suppliers, and governments across the world are joining the Tuna Transparency Pledge. Signatories to the pledge include companies and governments, spanning the entire tuna supply chain. A collaborative effort led by FAO and GFCM aims to protect marine ecosystems in Moroccan waters from negative impacts posed on cetaceans during fishing activities.
