Sustainability through transparency in global fishing activity

About us

Global Fishing Watch (GFW) is an international non-profit organisation committed to advancing the sustainability of our oceans through increased transparency. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, our mapping platform provides a powerful tool for ocean governance, empowering anyone to view or download data and investigate global fishing activity in near real-time, for free. GFW was founded in 2015 through a collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth and Google. Our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our funding partners. Our research, data and technology partners are central to achieving our mission to accelerate innovation and deliver actionable insights to increase transparency in commercial fishing and the sustainable management of our oceans.

🌊 The ocean is the single most important lifeline for addressing the climate crisis. Yet, only 8% of our global marine environments are currently protected. 🗺️ To help countries advance on global conservation efforts and assess progress toward their #30X30 commitments, Global Fishing Watch, SkyTruth and Bloomberg Philanthropies are among nonprofits using technology, big data and innovative research to offer up unprecedented insights into human activity on our seas. 👤 Global Fishing Watch's chief strategy and external affairs officer, Sarah Bladen, speaks to SkyTruth CEO John Amos in TriplePundit about how funding for open source platforms is changing the game for ocean advocacy, governance and protection. 🦈 Like many of their pelagic counterparts, silky sharks face an uncertain future plagued by overfishing, increased exposure to vessel traffic and other inherent threats. ⚓ Their vulnerability is further exacerbated by their behavior—as these sharks tend to congregate around tuna schools and drifting objects, making them easy targets for industrial fishing fleets. 📊 In a recent study, researchers from the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands, Guy Harvey Research Institute, Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF) at Nova Southeastern University in Florida and the Galápagos National Park Directorate, documented the most extensive migration ever recorded for a silky shark. 🛰️ Forbes reveals how the researchers harnessed satellite data, including vessel tracking data from Global Fishing Watch, to spotlight critical insights about the severely at-risk species and the urgent need for cooperative management measures to prevent further population decline. bit.ly/3Y4lgYi

🗺️ Global Fishing Watch’s unique map is based on satellite data that contains key information on vessel identities and positions. 📊 To turn this raw data into actionable insights, a data pipeline processes the information and outputs cleaned, organized and aggregated data in a format that can be used for visualization, analysis and reporting. 👤 We spoke to our senior manager for data and analysis, Hannah Linder, who shed further light on the inner workings and importance of the pipeline process. bit.ly/3Nmdjsx

We are so proud to open our tuna fleet VMS and lead in the Tuna Industry, the only fleet to share our data with Global Fishing Watch without quarantine or restriction. This GFW article shares the importance of enhancing the transparency at Sea operations against IUU and modern slavery. Go PNG! Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is one of the most pernicious threats to achieving a sustainable ocean future. A 2009 study conservatively estimates that up to 26 million tonnes of fish are caught illegally each year, accounting for 1 in every 5 fish sold at market. And in the Pacific islands region, that number goes as high as $333 million per year in IUU tuna alone. Illegal fishing harms fish stocks, undermines lawful fishers and threatens coastal communities that rely on fish for sustenance and income. It also poses a critical challenge for authorities in charge of patrolling such waters, as traditional enforcement methods are costly and largely inefficient. For countries such as Papua New Guinea, where the fishing industry plays a crucial role in bolstering the country’s economy and ensuring food security, IUU fishing is not just an inconvenience—it’s an existential threat. With a coastline stretching over 10,000 miles (16,093 kilometres), Papua New Guinea’s waters cover more than 926,000 square miles (2.4 million square kilometres)—just over half the size of Australia Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eSufWFDw Marcelo Hidalgo‎ Donald Papaol Nialangis Posanau Transform Aqorau John Maefiti Pacific Community-SPC Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Bianca Haas Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)

🐟 Globally, an estimated 26 million tonnes of fish are caught illegally each year. 🌊 This pervasive practice undermines conservation efforts, threatens the very survival of coastal communities and depletes fish stocks faster than they can recover. 🗺️ Amid ongoing efforts to ramp up enforcements against #IUUFishing, authorities in Papua New Guinea are leveraging Global Fishing Watch technology and data, to better monitor and respond to unregulated activity in their waters. bit.ly/4gQ080D
