Driving Transformation: Empowering Local Fisheries through the Tourism Sector 🌊✨ While the sustainable seafood movement typically spotlights high-volume fisheries in global markets, it's crucial to spotlight the significance of local fisheries and farms in diverse geographies, especially for the tourism sector. 🌏💙 Rethinking our approach to responsible seafood in these regions is key. During my journey at Iberostar Hotels, we initiated "Lifting Up Local" to tackle this challenge head-on. Our mission was to forge partnerships that effectively support local efforts, making the most of existing initiatives, and fostering improvement without duplication. 🤝💪 I have since left Iberostar, but the work continues. Food security doesn’t seem to be a national security issue for the American government. The government also couldn’t care less about sustainability. The scallop industry on the East Coast of the United States has experienced remarkable success in recent years, thanks to the diligent efforts of fishermen and the implementation of sustainable fishing practices. Fishing vessels on the East Coast typically navigating the bountiful waters in search of the prized shellfish. Through careful stewardship and management, fishermen have built the fishery into the most successful scallop industry in the world. Their dedication to sustainable practices has played a pivotal role in this achievement, ensuring that the scallop population remains robust and healthy for generations to come. Furthermore, the industry's commitment to responsible fishing has resulted in minimal bycatch, with fisheries operating at an impressive 100% sustainability rate. The East Coast scallop fishery's triumph can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of fishermen, scientists, and policymakers who have worked tirelessly to establish and enforce effective conservation measures. Sustainability #8 In this video, you can see a fishing vessel from the Indian offshore Trawler Industry. I make several videos per week regarding the commercial fishing industry. This particular industry is very badly managed, with massive amounts of bycatch and fishermen using very small mesh. The operations are conducted at a very fast pace. Contrary to the common belief that a large vessel must be involved in a nonsustainable fishery, this is not true. In fact, it’s usually the exact opposite. Most, but not all, fisheries in western countries are very well managed. Over the next few months, I will be posting about both sides of the industry: the side that we should embrace and reward for its excellent work in rebuilding fish stocks, as well as the unsustainable fisheries that should be shut down. Sustainability is paramount, and it is crucial to preserve a healthy marine ecosystem. This is something we can achieve, regardless of what the radical environmentalists might tell you. For this fishery i must label as nonsustainable, and a very destructive fishery.
