In the global market, high-quality tuna for sushi and sashimi is often bought from longline rather than small-scale fisheries using low-impact techniques like handline. However, our project in Oman has taken a unique approach to this and showed that this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case 🙌 🎣! Within 10 days in Oman, the team provided technical training in fish handling and cold storage. Our project successfully demonstrated that, with the right techniques, Omani handline tuna could become ‘Grade-A’ quality and post-harvest losses could be eliminated. The quality of tuna is determined within the first 3 to 5 minutes after capture. Proper handling and rapid cooling are essential for preserving a high-quality, safe, and hygienic product, thereby maximizing the potential value of the fishery. To achieve the highest grade 1 (A) tuna, IPNLF recommends a 7-step at-sea handling process, including the use of appropriate fishing techniques and equipment. Additionally, upon landing, the key factors for maintaining quality and preventing deterioration are maintaining the cold chain and proper fish handling. Thanks to Seafood Souq, one-by-one fishing expert Ryan Nienaber (IPNLF member Greenfish SA), and Craig Turley (IPNLF Fisheries Director) using their combined expertise, Omani tuna has seen an increase in product quality, reduced waste, and reduced environmental impact. It supports better economics for the local fishers, and with Seafood Souq providing a direct route to global buyers via its digitised seafood marketplace, the region is expanding its horizons beyond the shores of the Omani market. #onebyonetuna #premiumquality #ipnlf #sustainablefishing #fisheriesmanagement #fishforthefuture #everydropintheoceancounts #fisheryimprovement

New strategy ensures Barramundi stock is in abundance 🐟🐟 Media release by Northern Territory Seafood Council: Seafood plays a significant role in our Australian lifestyle, is key to a healthy diet, and is central to the social and food culture of many Australians. ‘In supplying the iconic wild caught Barramundi, industry is committed to ensuring sustainability,’ said Northern Territory Seafood Council, Chief Executive Officer, Ms Katherine Winchester. ‘Through innovation and the best available science, industry’s goal is to deliver the highest quality seafood and world-leading sustainability. This includes adopting a best-practice approach to operational fisheries management. ‘Despite the highly selective nature of gillnets used for harvesting Barramundi and King Threadfin, the Seafood Council acknowledges concerns about unintended bycatch from this gear type. Innovations are set to be rolled out during the 2024 Barramundi season, with extensive research on reducing interactions further, as well as, a program of electronic and real time monitoring to provide transparency and accountability. Whilst the sustainability of Barramundi stocks is not in question, the ongoing review of the Barramundi fishery has recognised the need to maintain a high level (abundance) of Barramundi across the fishery. An innovative interim commercial harvest strategy has been implemented to ensure that abundance is not negatively impacted by commercial effort. Standard commercial harvest strategies aim to deliver maximum catch or economic returns. Whilst the harvest strategy only impacts commercial operations, it is entirely driven by the objectives of maintaining high abundance levels, an objective agreed by all stakeholders. The Seafood Council, industry and all stakeholder representatives collaborated in the development of these important initiatives through the Barramundi Fishery Management Advisory Committee (BFMAC) a governance structure established by the Northern Territory Government - Fisheries Division to consult on how we best manage the fishery for all Territorians. The Seafood Council acknowledges the role of all stakeholders in supporting the NT Fisheries Division to finalise the development of these important strategies. We remain committed to finalising the review process for this iconic fishery and note the importance of maintaining a collaborative and open process. Media Release - Northern Territory Seafood Council responds to Territory Labor’s election commitment to ban gill nets to boost recreational fishing The Northern Territory Seafood Council (NTSC) strongly opposes Chief Minister Eva Lawler’s announcement to ban the use of commercial gillnets to boost recreational fishing in the Northern Territory. The policy is aimed at grabbing votes from a noisy minority and lacks economic or scientific credibility. ‘The consequence of this decision is to undermine the objectives, policies and procedures that the Government has tasked the NT Fisheries to implement,’ said Northern Territory Seafood Council, Chief Executive Officer, Mr Daniel Capps. ‘It is a cavalier approach that risks good governance based on transparency and accountability. ‘Policy developed for political expedience undermines the Government and erodes investor confidence. ‘This policy will harm the livelihoods of professional fishers, including Aboriginal Coastal Licence holders, and reduce the availability of wild-caught Barramundi and King Threadfin for Territorians and visitors. ‘So, what influences have resulted in the Lawler Government making this choice? It certainly isn’t data or science – her own Department have confirmed that Barramundi stocks are in pristine condition. ‘Further, most of the key recreational fishing areas are closed to commercial Barramundi fishing. There is no evidence that banning gillnets will boost recreational fishing,' said Mr Capps. When governments make policy on the run there can be unintended and disastrous consequences. The NT Government should support those in a sector that is facing difficulties due to external factors, with sound and well considered Government objectives and policies. The Northern Territory Seafood Council is committed to the following: • Ensure the sustainable delivery of seafood to the community; • Continue to support agreed policies and decision-making frameworks for the sector; • Continue to advocate for contemporary management arrangements to be implemented and supported by verifiable research; • Continue to support evidence-based resource-sharing arrangements to ensure fisheries are managed sustainably and that conflict between users is minimised; • Engage with members, Traditional Owners and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the highest standards of fishing practice that retains the iconic value and quality of our public resource; and • Working with the Northern Land Council to negotiate commercially viable access arrangements with Traditional Owners. The NTSC supports the Government’s commitment to economic development and investment attraction. Policy delivered as a response to noise from minority groups will not provide a stable jurisdiction for such investment.

Vilanculos in the province of Inhambane opens fishing season for more than four thousand tons. SEPTEMBER 4TH, 2023 BY SALVADOR BALOI After three months of closure, the district of Vilanculos, in the southern province of Inhambane, reopened the artisanal fishing season for the 2023/2024 period on Friday (September 1).. According to official data provided by the District Services for Economic Activities (SDAE), quoted by Revista Terra, the plan for this year is just over four thousand tons (4,067.4), corresponding to an increase in production of 10% compared to last year. The official opening of the season was marked by a seafood fair on Saturday (2) which, according to official sources, ?aimed to publicize the seafood preserved by the fence and ensure that there are no post-catch losses due to a lack of buyers? The Vilanculos district has a coastline of more than 150 km, exploited by around 2970 artisanal fishermen (in particular), who make up ten Community Fishing Councils and one association. Among the seafood that identifies the Vilanculos district are oysters, shrimp, lobster, crab, octopus, and many varieties of fish, mostly sold on the national market. From fortune cookies to fortune-telling fish: our work for the Global Tuna Alliance’s international campaigns in 2022-23 has built on a theme of prophecies and portents. What underpinned our campaign for sustainable tuna management in the Western-Central Pacific is the uneasy truth that while all tropical tuna stocks are currently healthy, without harvest strategies, their futures are left to fortune. This brought us to our campaign tagline: “Secure a future fortuna” - wordplay that not only nods to the Roman Goddess of fortune, but sends a clear message to decision-makers that major tuna buyers, such as the Partners of the GTA, are looking for long-term security to make long-term commitments to source their tuna from the region. And this wasn’t just a campaign concept - we brought Fortuna to life in a palm-size novelty product. You may recognise the red miracle fish, a familiar prize from Christmas crackers and birthday goodie bags. We took our own “Miracle Fortunas” along to a meeting of the Western-Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and distributed them among delegates and attendees: the movements of the Fortuna fish matching up to a series of GTA’s asks, fused with traditional fortunes that were written on our customised prophecy cards. Not only was this a standout way of delivering the seafood market’s message, but with so much progress on harvest strategies, Fortuna’s presence and prophecies must have had a clear impact.

When this fair was established, it attracted many merchants in the seafood industry including exporters and importers to gather here to look for each other as well as to "SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE? " But then, especially when COVID swept through, it cooled down the picture that Vietnamese exporters had painted for VIETFISH, the fair became "emptier" than in previous years. Exporters such as India, Indonesia, Korea, etc. are more present than importers coming to find quality and reputable supplies. Take a typical example: MEKSEA is the Platinum sponsor for Vietfish over many years and has invested extremely grandly in its booth, but the rate we welcome customers has gradually decreased. But that's not why we feel "bored" with VIETFISH, but it is the motivation for us to spread more to the international seafood community and say: Please come here, even though you have never been here before. never been intention but try coming here once, you will feel "it is true that the country is one of the top seafood exporters in the world", they have a variety of seafood products, especially nutritional value products extremely high but the price is extremely suitable. This is where you can find items that you "intended" to sell but didn't know where to start. This is where you can connect with "REAL" and "REPUTABLE" exporters instead of having to find these things on the INTERNET, but it brings many risks because it is impossible to authenticate the person sitting in front of the computer screen that we're working - "Who are they?"
