ISSF’s overarching objective in our 2023-2027 strategic plan is that all tuna fisheries that ISSF participating companies source from can meet and maintain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification – or have a clear roadmap and timetable in place to meet MSC standards. https://ow.ly/aEtQ50PM4Zt

TRCP applauds U.S. Congressmen Graves (R-LA), Soto (D-FL), Veasey (D-TX), and Wittman (R-VA) for their leadership on the bipartisan SHARKED Act, which just passed the U.S. House and now heads to the Senate. This legislation aims to establish a task force to address and mitigate problems from increased shark depredation. Saltwater anglers increasingly report that sharks are impacting fisheries and robbing them of successful fish landings, harming an industry that contributes $73.8 billion to the U.S. economy. TRCP and partners look forward to ultimate final passage of this bill so the task force can work with fisheries managers to identify research and funding opportunities to limit shark depredation.

It was a pleasure to meet today the Director General Charlina Vitcheva and team from the European Commission's Directorate Generale for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, with colleagues from Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Marine Institute. We discussed: • Ireland's use of European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund supports to ensure fisheries sustainability, environmentally and economically, and, • The need for greater data integration to address key questions about the shared use of marine resources and areas.

In a new report BLOOM’s ‘TunaGate’ series, BLOOM Association denounces the dangerous role the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label and retailers worldwide play in the destruction of MARINE ECOSYSTEMS. They appear to have abandoned any form of ambition with regards to the ‘sustainability’ of the most profitable fisheries in the world: TROPICAL TUNA fisheries. Since the first tuna fishery was certified in 2007, MSC-certified volumes have been multiplied by 730, skyrocketing from three million kilos to over 2.2 billion kilos (i.e., roughly half of the global tuna catch; and quickly rising). The prevalence of tuna catches made via ‘fish aggregating devices’ (FADs) is particularly worrisome, as this method is responsible for THE DEATH OF MILLIONS OF IMMATURE TUNA every year, and of vulnerable species including SHARKS and TURTLES. #sustainability #oceanprotection #sustainablefishing #marineecosystems
