As Haiti stares down an “extraordinary” 2024 hurricane season, a number of crises have left the nation dangerously unprepared. The upcoming storms threaten further devastation for Haitians still reeling from previous natural disasters, including the devastating 2010 quake that levelled Port-au-Prince and killed around 200,000 people. CARIBBEAN: Update – Hurricane strengthens Hurricane Beryl strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane after it made landfall and caused severe damage across southeastern Caribbean late yesterday (July 1), reports Associated Press. Beryl made landfall in Grenada and has killed at least one person so far. It is expected to make landfall in Jamaica by tomorrow (July 3). A hurricane warning is in place for Jamaica and a tropical storm warning has been issued for Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Winds of 270kph have been reported today (July 2). Flight cancellations will likely continue today, however some airports may reopen.
