Celebrating Collaboration and Innovations in Maternal and Newborn Care.   Yesterday, we convened an inspiring online meeting to support country networks for chapters. NGOs, researchers, Ministry of Health nutrition department and the Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN) came together to discuss critical work focused on infants under 6 months and mothers (MAMI) in Kenya.   I had the privilege of sharing Save the Children’s remarkable innovations during the meeting. Together, we’re making strides towards healthier futures for mothers and under 6 months babies.   Key achievements by Save the Children in MAMI include; 1. MAMI Implementation Tools: We’re developing tools tailored for lower literacy audiences, ensuring inclusivity and effectiveness. 2. Field Testing of Multi-MUAC Tapes conducted: Innovations like these empower frontline health workers and Community health promoters to assess malnutrition risk for under 6 months infant-mother Dyad accurately. 3. Integration of MAMI into Health Systems: By seamlessly integrating continuous screening at health facilities and outreach sites of under 6 months infant-mother Dyad, we’re enhancing early detection and care. 4. MAMI Baseline Coverage Survey: Measuring coverage before rolling out of Community health promoters (CHP) tools to ensure targeted impact. 5. Bi-monthly Community health promoters meetings: To sensitize CHP on MAMI Care Pathway & referral pathways to increase MAMI coverage and early detection. 6. Quarterly Peer Support Sessions: Regular sessions for pregnant and lactating (<6 months) mothers foster community, knowledge sharing, and emotional well-being. 7. The USAID/ASBC Activity is using #digitalinnovations in advancing sustainable health seeking behaviors among #pregnancy and #expectant mothers. As a community centric approach for demand generation for health services, the USAID funded project led by FHI 360 is using the Community Engagement for Health and Wellbeing initiative (CE4HW), to strengthen #healthcare delivery and enhance active #communityengagement and continue to use the #digitalinnovations to layer messaging to mothers. Currently, over #4000 mothers in #Sagnarigu and #MMD districts, are on the Kpododo Consult platform with #unique #qrcodes, receiving constant #reminders and #sbc #messaging targeted at shifting #behaviors.

Today, Countries commit to recover lost progress in maternal, newborn & child survival

Two Nigerian Doctors in mission to save lives of mothers during childbirth: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) says nearly 800 women are dying every day during childbirth, but two Nigerian doctors are joining innovators around the world to stem the tide. Dr. Hadiza Galadanci, an obstetrician and researcher from Nigeria, led a study called E-MOTIVE, where they designed a simple, low-cost way to identify when blood loss is dangerously excessive: a drape that looks like a V-shaped plastic bag. When this calibrated obstetric drape is hung at the edge of the bed, collected blood rises like mercury in a thermometer. And in a busy hospital ward, that visual gauge tells providers which patients are in danger in just a single glance. This study decreased cases of severe bleeding by a remarkable 60 percent in 200,000 women. Annually, 287,000 women die in pregnancy or childbirth, 4.9 million children die of largely preventable causes before their 5th birthday, and there are 1.9 million stillbirths. (WHO 2024). Most of these deaths are linked to preventable or treatable conditions, and can largely be averted with access to timely, high quality health care services. Progress in reducing maternal deaths has stalled since 2016, while survival gains for newborns and young children have lost pace.Hmanitarian crises and low investment on healthcare as well as commitment by the state to address underlying factors such as insecurity are key drivers of health inaccessibility in Nigeria. As countries commit to recover lost progress in maternal, newborn & child survival, it is important to note that every healthcare worker has a critical role to play in actualizing the objectives of the WHA. Beyond this, adopting a framework that incoporates social behavioural change communication (SBCC) is also very important in ensuring that people are not just aware of prevailing MCH issues but are committed to seeking for equitable health services provisions and delivery at all levels.
