Thrilled margaret odera has won CORE Group's Community Health Champion Award! Margaret is a devoted community health worker and mentor mother, and also a powerful advocate for CHWs in Kenya and around the world. IntraHealth first met Margaret in 2019, when we connected her with intensive storytelling and advocacy training. She’s since shared her experience as a CHW and advocacy recommendations at more than 25 events, including with global and national policymakers. In 2021 she founded the Community Health Workers Champions Network—the first network in Kenya to unify and mobilize community health workers in Kenya to advocate for fair pay and professionalization. As a dedicated community health worker and mentor based at the Mathare North Health Center in Nairobi, Kenya, Margaret has made a profound impact in her community. Since starting her role, she has tirelessly worked on mobilizations, sensitizations, referrals, linkages, and follow-ups to support pregnant and lactating mothers. Her personal experience with Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), including successfully guiding her own HIV-negative children through the program, exemplifies her commitment and compassion. Margaret is a passionate advocate for the professionalization of community health workers (CHWs). She founded the CHW Champions Network (CHWCN), which unites thousands of CHWs nationwide for advocacy and has been instrumental in pushing for better recognition and support for their work. Named a Health Hero in 2022, Margaret continues to inspire others with her belief that #ItIsPossible for every advocate to make a difference. Her unwavering dedication and leadership in global health serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of compassion and advocacy.
