While some of us will choose to relax poolside or on the beach, others will adventure to exotic destinations abroad. Whether you prefer staying close to home or experiencing somewhere new, Responsible Tourism is always important. What is Responsible Tourism? Responsible tourism reduces negative impacts on the environment, local communities, and animals. In its best form, it can improve quality of life for local communities, promote cultural heritage, and benefit the environment and wildlife. By contrast, “overtourism” refers to the negative impact of excessive numbers of tourists visiting popular destinations. These include reduced quality of life for residents in the area, pollution, strain on crucial resources, and an increased extinction risk for fragile native plants and animals. In some of the nations that experience overtourism, tourists can outnumber residents by as much as 33.5 to 1. Ensuring the local voice is the basis for tourism development on Christmas Island. Associate Professor Karen Hughes & I spent the week on the Christmas Island – meeting with stakeholders, talking with locals at their favourite hangouts, indulging in the Asian cuisine, and of course, weaving along the road to dodge all the crabs! Our project, funded by an Australian Government’s Indian Ocean Territory Marine Parks grants, and in partnership with Ecotourism Australia and the Christmas Island Tourism Association, supports sustainable tourism development that is driven by local needs and aspirations. Grant opportunity: Experience Nature Tourism Fund Open 08/07/24; Closes 16/08/24; $10,000 up to $50,000; SA The Fund aims to spur investment in nature-based tourism experiences and make South Australia more competitive in luring domestic and international tourists. Grants are for new and improved nature-based tourism products and experiences in or near a national park, reserve, wilderness protection area or marine park. The ENTF aims to showcase South Australia’s natural landscapes while also encouraging visitors to enjoy and learn more about these important natural and cultural assets.
