Last year, BlocPower partnered with the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI), the nation’s largest healthy housing organization, to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study on the integration of health-related services into electrification building upgrades. This first-of-its-kind study explores the potential health outcomes and healthcare savings associated with building electrification and lays out the challenges and opportunities to drive toward healthier communities. The challenges facing the NHS are complex and multiple in and outside of the built environment. The Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC) data published by NHS England confirmed the total cost of eradication of backlog maintenance within the Acute and Community Health estate has risen from £10.2 billion in 2021/22 to £11.6 billion in 2022/2023. Whilst the sums are enormous and continue the trend of year-on-year increase, the reported sum is lower than widely anticipated by some working in the sector. This observation perhaps underlines the scale of the issue. What other challenges is the health and care sector facing at the moment? And what are the areas of focus to optimise value? I am happy to share my reflections on the Ministry of Health budget today in relation to estate management. Both the minister and the chairperson of the parliamentary committee on health-related matters spoke of the limited land to support health facility expansion, which makes me think, may be a need for a review of property and facility managers and, of course, the estate officer for health-related facilities and buildings such as hospitals, as there is now a limitation on expansion. It may be a planning issue from the beginning, but I think that where spatial planning ends/fails, real estate starts. During valuation casework, my lecturer used to tell me we value the size of a hospital by the number of beds it has, as its carrying capacity. Listening to the Hon. Ummy Budgetary speech today on the number of newly added beds and emergency beds from 2021 to 2024, the engagement of estate management in the health sector is unavoidable.
