Looking forward to reading this report! ———————————————————————— “The Barriers to Federal Investment in Rural Communities report identifies potential strategies individual agencies could undertake to creatively address current barriers to rural access to federal resources, including proposing initiatives for the Appalachian Regional Commission, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Economic Development Agency. Additionally, we propose leadership initiatives that the Office of Management and Budget and that Interagency Councils and Working Groups could undertake to increase federal transparency and improve access to federal funding for rural, coal-impacted communities.”

Recently, our Executive Director Tegan Hoffmann presented at the 2024 Spring Summit hosted by the Bay Planning Coalition! The Summit’s theme was 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮 and was divided into three segments: Navigating the Current Funding Landscape, Showcasing Regional Projects, and Advancing Adaptation - Regional Finance and Coordination Strategies. It’s estimated $𝟭𝟭𝟬𝗕+ will be needed by 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬 to prevent major flooding in the area—funding that is not available now, nor anticipated to emerge in the near future. As 𝟳𝟱𝗞 total households, many of which are in the most socially vulnerable communities, 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝗞 jobs, and 𝟮𝟬𝗞 vulnerable acres are at risk, it’s essential that we work together on BIG solutions and coordinate and act regionally to get BIG bucks. The cost of inaction is far higher than the cost of adaptation—a whopping $𝟮𝟯𝟬𝗕! We’re exited about tomorrow's Global Mangrove Alliance workshop and we invite our partners and community to join: "Turning Guidelines into Action: Implementing Best Practices in Mangrove Restoration," February 21st, 2024, at 8:00 am EST / 2:00 pm CEST During this session, you'll gain insights into the optimal approaches for designing, funding, and executing mangrove restoration projects. In the past year, the Global Mangrove Alliance and Blue Carbon Initiative collaborated with leading scientists and practitioners to develop "The Best Practice Guidelines for Mangrove Restoration." The objective of the guidelines is to align mangrove practitioners, NGOs, governments, scientists, industry representatives, local communities, and funders in support of universally accepted best practices for science-based and inclusive mangrove restoration. Goumbook’s Trees Matter Initiative will use this document as a guide for the project, so that we are practicing the best science and maximizing our impact. #TreesMatter #MangrovePlanting #Goumbook #ClimateAction

Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) released "Making Connections for Stronger Businesses and Resilient Communities: Evaluation of ARC Business Development Grants Closed Between 2017–2021." This report shows that ARC investments in business development projects facilitated the creation or retainment of 29,352 jobs and the establishment of 1,944 new businesses in the Appalachian region in this period. https://bit.ly/41yU45i
