📈 Our third Annual Review of the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing (SRS) showcases significant strides in ESG performance by social housing providers across the UK. A survey conducted as part of the Review highlights that SRS housing providers are making progress in ESG areas including energy efficiency, affordability, and social equity. It also finds that the SRS is delivering better and more useful information to help funders. We are incredibly proud of the progress our Adopters have made in enhancing their ESG performance and delighted that the findings in our Annual Review underscore the positive impact of the SRS on the sector. If you have feedback or questions or would like to discuss the benefits of adopting the SRS, please contact 📧 srs.contact@thegoodeconomy.co.uk. #SustainabilityForHousing #SocialHousing #ESG #ESGReporting

With the built environment contributing to nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, investors are increasingly utilising ESG principles to understand and optimise the sustainability credentials of their real estate portfolios. However, does sustainability have to come at a the expense of delivering competitive returns? Not necessarily, argues Sadaf Askari. In her latest piece for Institutional Real Estate Europe, Sadaf looks at the regulatory constraints investors need to navigate, and whether current frameworks go far enough when it comes to issues like retrofitting. 🆕 Momentum on environmental, social and governance reporting is strong, but we are committed to improving the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing, writes Sarah Forster from our secretariat, The Good Economy, in a new article for Social Housing. As we welcome our 150th Adopter, Sarah reflects on how far the SRS has come in tightening the focus on social and environmental performance and transforming the way investors view the social housing sector. She also reveals key feedback on the value of the SRS and insights from housing associations and funders that we will delve into in our upcoming annual review. Looking ahead, Sarah describes how we will continue to work with partners in the sector and help prepare them to report against Version 2.0 of the SRS later this year. This includes guiding them on challenging areas such as reporting Scope 3 emissions, a specific aspect we know housing associations have been finding difficult. ESG is here - no longer a nice-to-have but an absolute necessity for the real estate industry and for their investors. As the pressure from ESG regulations amended by the EU is becoming more prominent, the social aspect is gaining equal importance to environmental and governance reporting. As written in Property Forum’s article: ‘Factors impacting the attractiveness of the work environment and diversity, equity and inclusion matters are increasing in importance.’ With that being said, real estate developers and property owners must be prepared to submit reliable and verified information about their efforts towards social sustainability and ‘S’, as investors need to be mindful of this when putting together their property portfolios. How accessible is ESG reporting to smaller Housing Associations? Susan French, Chief Executive of Barnsbury Housing Association, encouraged more small Housing Associations to get involved in ESG reporting at our recent webinar about Version 2.0 of the Sustainability Reporting Standard for Social Housing (SRS). She said: “I would encourage any small Housing Association to give it a go. It’s not an onerous process, there will be gaps, but it’s a good starting point.” Brendan Sarsfield, Chair of SfH, was also keen to highlight the ability of smaller HAs to report against the Standard successfully. “I think small and medium HAs are more nimble and less siloed. I think some of the best reports I’ve seen have come from small and medium-sized organisations,” he noted.
