Every 2 years we host a global gathering of leaders from across C12 for CURRENT - a unique conference for results-oriented, faith-driven, builders of businesses to connect with like-minded peers, engage in practical best practice learning and advance their stewardship of vision. Part of what’s unique is we go through a nominating process, where >90% of the faculty will be CEOs put forward by the network as possessing a best practice, acumen, lesson, case study that would be universally beneficial for others to learn from. Over 60 such CEOs were nominated. We interviewed over 60! We narrow it down and then do a second round of interviews on 25-30. We select plenary speakers with over-arching case studies of scaling a great business with a greater purpose expression. We identify others who are more specialists with a best practice in an area of an eternally-balanced scorecard in business (we call it the “5 Point Alignment Matrix”) - so things like sales/marketing, operations, organizational disciplines, finance, etc. We just concluded the process. It took my breath away! We serve INCREDIBLE leaders! I found myself thinking how many movies, books, case studies and articles should be produced on these stories. Even ones we’re “passing” on due to the recipe of diverse stories we’re seeking are plenary-worthy sharing. Be encouraged. There is a LOT of GOOD happening in the world. There are a TON of CEOs, business owners, executives who are telling a better story in business. There is authentic faith in practice, there are genuine followers of Jesus building great businesses for a greater purpose that is changing worlds in greater number and rigor than you would ever suspect from the headlines of our newsfeeds. It’s really inportant to develop ways to ensure people share disenting points of view and don’t agree and then have the meeting after the meeting. This where finding the beauty in conflcit becomes very important. Your differences are key to creativity and engagement. I would like to take the time to thank David J. Albritton, PCC for being my personal point of light at this year’s Points of Light conference. After my interaction with him on the first day of the conference I was so disheartened. He challenged me and I wasn’t ready for it. He then gave me some sound advice and encouraged me to figure out my value proposition. This had my brain reeling because my main goal was to network while here, yet I couldn’t answer the simple question in 30 seconds or less….what do you do? I immediately started working on a response literally in the next few moments. By morning, with the help of Severina Ware, CVA and Rebecca Hand, MPA, CVA I had an answer that I could confidently blurt out on a moments notice. I thank him for challenging me with that question. Although I had worked on my value proposition with the incredible Sharon Goldstein, M.S., CPC, the thought had never occurred to me practice it out loud. Because David wasn’t afraid to challenge me on the spot (I was literally flustered) I grew in a matter of hours and I was able to confidently answer that question over and over and over for remainder of the conference, making a huge difference in my overall conference experience. And that’s a wrap on our annual KDVI retreat. At its heart, our retreat is a chance for our associates around the world to gather and reconnect, but it also gives us the opportunity to explore topics together as a team. - We deep-dived into several of our tools, and used our Inner Theatre Inventory to enable us to get to know each other, surface blindspots and understand each other in a way that helps us work together more effectively. - We discussed several live cases in small groups, working together to explore issues, provide support and create space for breakthroughs. All around us was meaningful, action-oriented discussion. - We engaged our associates in a detailed discussion about our Leadership Mystique programme, demonstrating how the programme is designed to create challenging conversations, and feedback and exchange on complicated issues. But that to achieve that, you need to first build trust. Trust was a recurring theme throughout the retreat. It’s brilliant when it clicks! 😀 This week with my Purple Story (The Home of Operational Excellence) Hat on (well, Hoodie actually) I got to work with this fab bunch of venue managers from Flight Club Darts . We met up in Bristol for a new leadership module focused around having purposeful conversations. I much prefer the term purposeful conversations to difficult conversations, because I think it immediately puts you into a positive mindset focused on positive outcomes, rather than cause fear and anxiety about dealing with possible conflict. The situations you end up dealing with may well be tough, but your approach can feel very different based on that mindset switch. As a facilitator I often come to sessions with a plan, knowing I’m going to have to adapt it during the session, depending where we go and what the group needs. In this session the lightbulbs and learnings were so strong, we doubled down and focused on the core elements of the topic, to maximise the energy and the learning. It’ll be my job the catch them up on the other planned topics at another point. Sometimes, when a group is struggling you have a decision to dig in or move on. It’s the same when a group is flying sometimes. Something happened with this group this time around. The level of questioning and challenge they gave to each other went to another level and a s a result huge strides were made. It was a fair drive back from Bristol that day, but boy did I have a smile on my face. As Hannibal Smith from the 80’s TV show The A-Team (showing my age) said “I love it when a plan comes together.” But if I’m honest I love it more when the original plan is kyboshed, you have to adapt and even better things happen! 😉 #purposeful #conversations #leadership
