This is a powerful, must-watch or listen-to story, and journalism is just one piece of it. https://lnkd.in/grnTg-Hm Unfortunately, much of the training provided to journalists covering homelessness fails to address the importance of treating homeless individuals with respect and dignity. That should be the first conversation. People should always come before the story. Stand back. Things might be about to get a little scary. How come? In the latest episode of The Fix, Nick and I talk politics. Noooooo. Starmer... Sunak... even Farage haunts this often expletive-filled episode. But the truth is, we're not really talking about the politics here... we're talking about the copy. Specifically, the copy used in election campaigning to try to get you to take action and vote for one party or another. Mostly, it's crap — and we explain why. And we even explain what copywriters can learn from controversial old Nigel. So, grab a bag of politically balanced potato chips and enjoy the show. You can find it on our Patreon, on Spotify or on YouTube. Or you can ignore this message and continue worrying about things. There's so much worry isn't there? It's not good.

This story came out at the beginning of the year: https://lnkd.in/eM5rBykX? and it explores a uniquely American issue (and tragedy). I think they do a good job of trying to understand what is likely happening and who is impacted most. "So this suggests, actually, that the people who are being killed are probably some of the most vulnerable in American society — low income people walking to work along a highway in the middle of the night going to a shift, can’t afford a car, and homeless people." While the podcast is focused on cars, transit and mobility, I think it begs a larger question about the spaces we do or do not create for those who don't have money and the many systems already in place - and the ones being built today - that simply do not care to include the needs of those without financial stability. Sometimes it also feels uniquely American to push people to the margins mostly so that we then don't have to see what happens to them out there.

📻 End of an Era: WCBS-AM 880 Goes Silent This week we learned that WCBS-AM News Radio 880 will be going off the air in a couple of weeks. WCBS-AM 880, a station that has been a cornerstone of New York City’s news and talk radio for decades. I started listening years ago to get the news on my commute to and from NYC. The decision to terminate this iconic station is not just the end of a broadcast—it’s a reflection of the rapidly changing landscape of media consumption. As more listeners shift towards digital platforms, podcasts, and on-demand content, traditional broadcast radio faces an uncertain future. The removal of WCBS-AM 880 serves as a reminder that even the most established institutions must evolve or risk being left behind in this digital age. This change raises important questions about the future of local news, community engagement, and the preservation of voices that have been integral to our daily lives. While it’s a sad day for those of us who grew up tuning into 880 for the latest updates, it’s also a call to action for the industry to innovate and adapt to the new ways people consume information. I will miss the news updates and the traffic updates on my drives to Montauk. I guess it is just more time for listening to podcasts 🤷♂️

Why do television shows pretend that no one talks about money? Friends – a generally wildly unrealistic show when it comes to lifestyle – does have one moment when they do a great job. In one early episode, Joey, Rachel and Phoebe commiserate that the other three make more money and don’t seem to notice that it can be an issue for them. The matter then quickly comes to a head when Ross expects the six of them to equally split a costly (for 1995) dinner bill when Ross, Chandler and Monica ordered much more expensive items. You can see a short compilation of what happens in the episode (Season 2, Episode 5: The One With Five Steaks and an Eggplant) through the video here or on my TikTok: https://lnkd.in/e_bUZCQN The show resolves the storyline by something bad happening that supersedes this matter and shows how the group is all there for each other despite their fight. The underlying issue itself is never resolved, however; the show doesn’t really return to how groups of friends are supposed to handle realistic financial disparities. While that is disappointing, I do think this episode demonstrates well how awkward yet important opening the door for conversations about money with people in your life is. I have lost friends over disputes about money. For me that’s almost always other people expecting me to spend money on them. But in one case it was that the other person felt like I expected him to spend more than he was comfortable with, yet never directly told me that. I regret now not having financial conversations with these people. Maybe if I had dealt with it differently, things could have been improved before it was too late. #moneytalks #conversationsaboutmoney #howtotalkaboutmoney #financialliteracy

Today we released a brand new episode of the Asklé B&B Corner about Domestic Violence. It was a challenging conversation and one I was very nervous to publish. This is clearly an important and sensitive topic. Filled with emotion and complexity. What is happening seems obvious - the fact that violent, aggressive men are the problem is clear. Yet the solutions are anything but. Why is this continuing to happen? And what the hell are we to do about it? Stephanie Slater and I discussed it with as much respect as we could muster, yet in the end we had to cut the episode short because we were unable to find a path forward. So we decided to make it Part 1, of how many parts we are unsure. But Part 2 will be released soon, and I’m excited to say that we will be speaking with Professor Vincent Hurley (PhD) - a Macquarie University lecturer specialising on the contemporary role of the police and policing within criminological theories. For those who watched Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Q&A program last night you will have seen his passionate and emphatic plea for politicians to take meaningful action. In his own words “it is worse than appalling.” The short clip below has received more than 70,000 likes since this morning. Clearly more should be done, and can be done. We are excited to speak with Vincent and hear about some of his ideas. Part 1 available now on Apple & Spotify - link in bio.
