I share multiple experiences found in the forefront of manufacturing, enjoy the working environment, resolving complex issues in hopes of exceeding customer or the end user expectations.
JOB KITTING-Anonymous person asked-if you were needing more efficiency out of your current job kitting. Because of order delays or time constraints found throughout the process. My advice would be to find the variance through the daily orders scheduled for the day. Analyze the bill of materials (BOM) for the numbering of products the company needs to manufacture based off of the extended schedule or the production orders needed in advance. Run a spreadsheet with the outliers or different components from the other models. The variance of the nuts and bolts should be color coded or uniqueness in some way. confirm the multiples of the same kind and KANBAN the bags regularly used. Create a pull cart for the one-off specialty components. Using simple models (spaghetti charts) to represent where the inventory would be pulled for the daily activities, place the variable pull cart somewhere within the route that makes sense for the picker. The starting point and end point will be as critical as the shelves uniquely marked holding the supplies to meet the day-to-day customer build schedule. If the parts are extremely large a different racking system and route may be helpful.

Why You Should Hire Me, a series Episode 2: Warehouse & Production Layout Planning Throughout my career, I've learned that I have a knack for spatial planning. I love planning for optimal use of space and material flow, and I'm good at it. In one position, in a 20 000+ sqft facility, more than once I was able to review "at capacity" storage, and put together a consolidation and reorganization plan to free up dozens of pallet positions to accommodate incoming bulk shipments. In that same position, I helped drive strategies for making the best use of available space to store materials in the most efficient way possible. This helped increase space utilization while also ensuring that the products with the most frequent demand were kept in convenient locations, and that items commonly used together were within close proximity to each other, minimizing worker travel time. Later in my career, I was faced with a much smaller warehouse (about 2000 sqft), that was over capacity. Product was stored in aisles, and accessing any of it involved moving it multiple times. After careful consideration and planning, I executed a multi-phase project which actually removed 75% of the shelving, 100% of the pallet racks, and reduced aisle space by 80%. The changes resulted in nearly tripling storage capacity, as well as increased product flow & accessibility. Even better, it led to a much safer work environment with straighter pathways, more securely stored materials and fewer tripping hazards. Adjacent to that reorganization project, I led a project to redesign assembly work stations and redefine production support/material handling duties to increase production efficiency by about 30% overall. Between the Warehouse and Production Reorganization projects, I was able to eliminate the need for the Executive Team to seek additional or alternate facilities, thereby avoiding an expensive relocation. Through all of the above, I collaborated with other direct stakeholders to ensure their ideas were implemented where possible and their concerns were addressed. I also shared my process and decision making strategy with my subordinates, peers and superiors in order to give them insights into how continuous improvement projects could be approached and implemented in their own areas of responsibility. Stay tuned for Episode 3, where I will dive into my journey of education and professional development. #inventory #layout #safety #efficiency #warehouse #manufacturing #management
