Great use of Gen AI (an LLM trained on a strategy and command specific corpus) to assess our structure and generate policy options. Placing competition and other pillars of statecraft (like economics and information) is an interesting idea, especially the idea of an interagency command. Fun and thought provoking article.

In a future where global competition intensifies, the United States faces the need to rethink its military command structure. This narrative, grounded in a recent report by Benjamin Jensen, Kathleen McInnis, and Jose M. Macias III, imagines a world where AI-driven insights shape the Unified Command Plan (#UCP) to better explore 21st-century challenges. Every two years, #Pentagon, often referred to as the "Puzzle Palace," becomes a hub of activity. Here, military leaders and strategists gather to update the UCP, a classified document that outlines the responsibilities and missions of U.S. #military commands. This year, however, they have a new tool at their disposal: generative artificial intelligence. As global competition heats up, particularly with China, the U.S. must adapt. The #AI suggests a bold new direction. It envisions new commands specifically designed for the gray areas of conflict—those that don't involve direct military action but require security cooperation and influence operations. These commands would integrate human factors and influence networks to outmaneuver adversaries. In the #cyber age, the battlefield has expanded to space and digital realms. The AI recommends a unified command that merges cyber, space, and electronic warfare capabilities. This command would support a broad range of deterrence strategies, offering the U.S. military an extensive toolset for modern conflicts. Efficiency is key. The AI proposes reducing the number of combatant commands and increasing the use of joint task forces. This streamlined approach would allow the U.S. to respond more quickly and effectively to emerging threats. Reimagining the UCP: 🔹Global Engagement Command: Imagine a new command that focuses on non-military aspects of security. This command would integrate economic and technological strategies to counter global threats, especially from China. It would coordinate efforts across various government agencies, enhancing the U.S.'s ability to compete globally. 🔹Unified Cyber, Space, and Information Command: Picture a single command that oversees cyber operations, space missions, and information warfare. By merging these capabilities, the U.S. could better synchronize its efforts and respond more effectively to threats in these domains. 🔹New Geographic Commands: Visualize the merging of U.S. European Command (#USEUCOM) and Central Command (#CENTCOM) into a new Eurasian Command, addressing threats from Russia and China in a more unified manner. Similarly, combining Northern Command (#USNORTHCOM) and Southern Command (#USSOUTHCOM) into an Americas Command would streamline operations in the Western Hemisphere.
