Lag and Latency - what's the difference? These terms are often used interchangeably, but they're not the same. 🌐 Latency is the technical term for the time it takes for a signal to travel from one point to another and back. 🌐 Lag is the noticeable delay experienced in online activities due to high latency. The lower the latency, the lower the lag, and the better the internet experience. And the best network for minimizing lag and latency is a fiber optic network. Telecom Lesson from Year 2001: We were trying to replace a SS tower w/a monopole. The SS tower had an Osprey nest on it. Enviro people said "Build a platform, move nest to platform." We waited for baby birds and the parents to leave and did that. Permitting took longer than expected (we had to go through a full blown CUP process) + budget snafus and pretty soon it's Osprey season again. The "Osprey Condo" worked, the birds moved right onto their platform. YAY! But something never occurred to me (or anybody else apparently; we were all swamped w/work). One day I get a call from CM: "We should've wrapped the top of the tower in chicken wire. ANOTHER osprey has built a nest where the old one was." I slapped my forehead and started crying. A year later.....same problem! Time to build another "condo"... The LESSON I learned: Don't expect the experts you're working with to know everything. You still need common sense. I should have asked "What prevents another osprey from building a nest where the old one was?"

Middle mile network MMN The middle mile is the physical mid-section of the infrastructure required to enable internet connectivity for homes, businesses, and community institutions. A MMN serves the state best when it offers multiple ingress and egress points allowing traffic to be rerouted as necessary. This might happen in the case of routine maintenance, natural disaster or even load balancing. The network adds redundancy with connections to multiple upstream carriers. In an example like Alabama Cogent Communications would serve the state from multiple POP’s inside and outside of the state. Using POP’s within the state enables high-speed connectivity without a costly fiber build. Cogent is live with 100GE POP’s in #Huntsville, #Birmingham, #Montgomery and #Atmore #Alabama. Existing fiber infrastructure connecting the state to #Atlanta #Ashburn #Chicago and #Dallas are other points where the network would be connected. My posts and opinions are my own. Colorado Opens Highway Right-of-Ways to Broadband Installation. Colorado communities and service providers looking to improve broadband access will have a new, accelerated and discounted option to help expand high-speed Internet access throughout the state. ...“Just as our transportation system creates vital connections for all Coloradans, we all need the modern connectivity of broadband to fully access opportunities and services. The Transportation Commission has heard the perspectives of local com- munities throughout the state as well as industry concerns, and the proposal that we approved today offers greater opportunities for broadband development, competes favorably with our neighboring states on costs, and meets the state’s existing legal obligations to care for the public land under our responsibility,” “Underserved communities have an urgent need for improved broadband access, and today’s access fee plan offers another option for high-speed internet development throughout Colorado. It's easy to see how a city and area residents wouldn't want one of these light pole cell site designs and rejected the proposed installation at a Carlsbad city park. But this proposed site is in one of the designated "preferred" areas for wireless siting in the code. Nonetheless, the City rejected the application on appeal. I am guessing that it didn't help that Verizon followed up shortly thereafter with their own separate application and the City was faced with multiple similar sites at the park. To me, it begs the following questions: 1. Could AT&T have proposed something less obtrusive than these three options? 2. Wondering if the Parks department negotiated the lease without fully thinking about what the end result would look like? 3. What's the point of having "preferred" locations under the City wireless policy if the City isn't going to honor it? 4. How much money and time did AT&T waste pursuing this? https://lnkd.in/gje8EkVR

$6 billion is the projected cost for the I-35 expansion in Austin. That’s more than the city’s entire yearly budget.And research shows time and time again that adding more lanes does not fix traffic. The short-term costs include billions of dollars, the destruction of homes and businesses, and an even harsher barrier between East and West Austin. The long-term costs include indefinite maintenance obligations beyond our ability to pay, another generation of space for people lost to asphalt, and the opportunity cost of billions of dollars that could be invested in making our communities stronger.
