NST 18 June 2024 Singtel's regional data centre business, Nxera, has recently announced a strategic partnership with Malaysian telco TM to develop a series of data centres, starting with a large campus in Johor. Welcome to Malaysia ! This project, set to be the largest for both companies, will be located in Iskandar Puteri, just 16 km away from Singapore. The site will cater to hyperscalers, AI application providers, and enterprises, promising top-notch reliability, security, and sustainability, along with excellent connectivity both locally and internationally. The initial phase of the data centre will boast a capacity of 64 MW, with plans to scale up to 200 MW, specifically designed to support high-power density workloads with cutting-edge technologies like liquid cooling. While this partnership presents exciting opportunities for both Singtel and TM, we can't help but raise concerns about whether Malaysia will see proportionate benefits from this venture. With the substantial electricity demand that data centres require, coupled with potential government subsidies adding to the mix, it's crucial to ensure fair play for all parties involved. Will Malaysia Government have a knowledgeable, professional negotiating team in place to secure the best possible deal for Malaysia ? Unfortunately, historical precedents may suggest otherwise. It's essential for both companies to work together transparently and fairly to ensure that the benefits of this partnership are reasonably distributed. #Singtel #TM #Nxera #DataCentre #DigitalTransformation #TechPartnership #Malaysia #Singapore #Innovation #BusinessGrowth #DigitalEconomy #StrategicPartnership #DataInfrastructure #FairPlay #Negotiations #Sustainability

Could Malaysia’s 5G strategy enable mobile operators to monetize through synchronization services? Malaysia is at the forefront of 5G deployment, led by the government-owned Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). DNB acts as a neutral host controlling all 5G spectrum and operates all 5G radio base stations across Malaysia, ensuring connectivity is available to all mobile operators. This setup not only promotes high spectrum efficiency and sustainability by sharing infrastructure but also powers a variety of innovative use cases in collaboration with leading global tech companies. Recently, DNB in partnership with Swedish tech giant Ericsson, announced initiatives to accelerate digital transformation in Malaysian enterprises. This includes piloting autonomous transport with eMooVit Technology, enhancing fleet management with Scania Group, and enabling smart manufacturing with SKF Group Malaysia using 5G technology. These collaborations highlight the crucial role of 5G in driving innovation across multiple industries. David Hägerbro, head of Ericsson in Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, emphasizes that "Malaysia’s world-class 5G network is ranked among the top five in the world," attributing its success to excellent 5G availability, affordability, customer experience, and network capability. Time synchronization lends itself to a similar neutral host model sharing one investment between several operators and enterprises. Providing "Time as a Service" could be a new way for 5G operators to capitalize on their investments in 5G infrastructure. By providing time synchronization not just for 5G but also to other industry segments such as utilities and government services, operators can unlock additional value and broaden their impact. Could this neutral host model be the blueprint for future telecommunications infrastructure globally? Only time will tell, but Malaysia is certainly setting a compelling precedent. This pioneering strategy may well inspire other countries to explore similar paths, potentially reshaping the global telecom industry.
