NST 18 June 2024 Singtel's regional data centre business, Nxera, has recently announced a strategic partnership with Malaysian telco TM to develop a series of data centres, starting with a large campus in Johor. Welcome to Malaysia ! This project, set to be the largest for both companies, will be located in Iskandar Puteri, just 16 km away from Singapore. The site will cater to hyperscalers, AI application providers, and enterprises, promising top-notch reliability, security, and sustainability, along with excellent connectivity both locally and internationally. The initial phase of the data centre will boast a capacity of 64 MW, with plans to scale up to 200 MW, specifically designed to support high-power density workloads with cutting-edge technologies like liquid cooling. While this partnership presents exciting opportunities for both Singtel and TM, we can't help but raise concerns about whether Malaysia will see proportionate benefits from this venture. With the substantial electricity demand that data centres require, coupled with potential government subsidies adding to the mix, it's crucial to ensure fair play for all parties involved.
