‘A Degrowth Perspective on UBI’ – April 18th at 4pm (UK time) "Degrowth has recently undertaken a critical examination of the traditional concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI), recognizing its potential both to support and to diverge from degrowth objectives. This discourse integrates UBI within a broader degrowth framework, alongside complementary concepts such as Universal Basic Services (UBS), local alternative non-speculative exchange systems, maximum income, wealth redistribution, decommodification, commons, and re-embedding the market. This presentation aims to demonstrate how UBI can serve to re-empower individuals and foster citizen participation through deep deliberation on our basic needs and how these can be sustainably, convivially, and enjoyably met. The talk will begin with a brief introduction to degrowth, followed by a detailed discussion on the conditions under which UBI could serve as an effective tool for degrowth initiatives." I just finished this webinar with SAICE on using AI in industry. We looked at AI playing a key role with humans versus taking away jobs from humans, but then the new technology of the robot taxing was being tested, and our speaker Brian Downie asked what happens when the AI takes over its code. Then Kim Timm introduced 3D concrete fresh off the international conference. I am currently doing Design 2 and wonder how the 3D Printed concrete would hold up to failers in slab-to-column connections in multi-story buildings where these conditions get tricky 🤔 Lastly, Ricardo Lopes stole the show with Lidar technology and showed its power to map its surroundings accurately. It is super interesting, and I would like to explore the technology side of civil engineering more. 👨🎓 Super Informative!
🚨 Reminder 🚨 There's still time to register and join us this afternoon at 16:00 for an insightful session on "Understanding Local and Global Societal Dependency on Technology," hosted by the SAICE Academy in association with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (NRF SAASTA). Register here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gDkUudB3 Our panellists will explore the development of technology over time, how it is being used in our industry and what impact it will have on society in the future! 🎉 IMDEA Networks is proud to announce that our researchers Juan Marcos Ramírez, Vincenzo Mancuso, and Marco Ajmone Marsan have received the Best Paper Award for their work 👇 🔹The Rumble in the Millimeter Wave Jungle: Obstructions Vs RIS 🗺️ Presented at the Mediterranean Communication and Computer Networking Conference (MedComNet), June 2024, in Nice, France. 📉 This paper concentrates on the effects of Poisson-located obstructions on millimeter wave links and derives a path loss model for RIS-assisted communications. Considering operating frequency, object density, size, minimum SNR, and operating frequency, it assesses the likelihood of an outage in indoor environments with antenna beam-steering and random obstructions. Published a new open access paper with my colleague Christoph Becker on geopolitics and insecurities in telecommunication networks. The article shows that telecommunications standardization does not always create safer networks, but rather keeps insecurities intact if they benefit large nation states. This in not about lawful intercept (expect a paper on that soon), or back doors, but known insecurities that are not addressed - potentially intentionally. “Infrastructural Insecurity: Geopolitics in the Standardization of Telecommunications Networks.” https://lnkd.in/dS_D4ANF PS it also has pretty graphs! 🤓🤩
