The Texas City Refinery: An explosion occurred on March 23, 2005, when a vapour cloud of natural gas and petroleum ignited and violently exploded at the BP Texas City refinery in Texas City. Killing 15 workers, injuring 180 others and severely damaging the refinery. The explosions occurred when a distillation tower flooded with hydrocarbons and was overpressurized, causing a geyser-like release from the vent stack.
