We keep an eye on electricity frequency. Did you know when the electricity frequency falls below 49.25Hz because of a loss of injection of more than 60MW into the grid, it’s called an under-frequency event? Changes in supply and demand for electricity can have a major effect on the frequency of the grid. If there’s more demand for electricity than there is supply, then frequency will fall. Or if there is too much supply, frequency will rise. Unstable frequencies can damage equipment and have serious implications when providing electricity at a national scale. After the system operator investigates an under-frequency event, it’s our job to determine the cause. We’re currently seeking feedback from generators, the grid owner and other industry participants on an under-frequency event that occurred on 11 April.
