🌐✨ Key Insights from Today's Sixth Intersessional Meeting of the Human Rights Council on Human Rights and 2030 Agenda, on Integrating Human Rights into the International Financial Architecture Reforms: A Cornerstone for Realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and a Human Rights Economy. Today’s discussion focused on how international financial institutions (IFI) policies, operations, analyses, and metrics could be aligned with the human rights obligations of Member States and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. OHCHR: Global Progress on reducing poverty and achieving SDGs is facing unprecedented challenges. The number of people living in extreme poverty is rising, and over 750 million lack adequate food. Developing countries bear the brunt of multiple crises, revealing shortcomings in the global financial system. Recognizing this, the UN Secretary-General has called for urgent reforms in international financial architecture stating that: “The international financial architecture is “outdated, dysfunctional and unjust…” and must “evolve in a giant leap towards global justice”. Antonio Guterres High Commissioner Volker Türk stated in his opening remarks: “In the wake of the pandemic, countries are drowning even deeper in debt. Developing nations carry the biggest burden. They pay interest rates up to eight times higher than developed countries, pushing them into debt distress. Yet there is still no multilateral legal framework which could ensure sovereign debt crises are resolved fairly, swiftly, and effectively.” Volker Türk Now is the time to prioritize human rights in international financial, debt, and tax systems. This ensures maximum resources for economic, social, and cultural rights, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable future. 🎞️ Watch the entire session through this link: https://lnkd.in/eZpr7sJm A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, contributing valuable insights to this important conversation. 🌍💬 #UN #OHCHR #HumanRightsEconomy #SDGs #FinancialReforms #SustainableDevelopment

#UNValues: After 79 years of extramarital affairs, political oblique triangles, asymmetrical arrangements, swinging betrayals, nonreciprocal sacrifices, humanitarian gang bangs and immoral proposals, the United Nations will stage a #Multilateralism themed mass wedding i.e., Summit of the Future to be held in September 2024. And then, Princes take Cinderellas to their zero-net castles ... and all will live happily and sustainably ever after. 1. Thought-provoking and exact to the point, the PassBlue's opinion piece, structured by a witty comparison, makes a good weekend reading. 2. Indeed, the free falling #UN system with its bleaker than ever credibility needs a few things urgently: something old - like honesty, something new - like youth and women empowerment, something borrowed - like nature resilience, and something blue - like peace and humanity. 3. A few things need to be eradicated at once: something old - like institutional and moral corruption, something new (actually old) - like another set of empty promises and ever-receding targets, something borrowed - like political and corporate greed, and something (dark almost black) blue - like humanitarian disasters and human suffering. #PactForTheFuture #HumanitarianCrisis #UNReforms #SummitOfTheFuture #UNGA79
#Opinion: Given the stakes, how might governments tailor a #PactForTheFuture that actually meets the moment? Here’s one proposal: They should heed the sartorial advice traditionally offered to brides for an auspicious wedding. That is, they should include something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. #multilateralism #TheUN #Reform

The world is facing a polycrisis, and that’s because our global governance institutions privilege state interests determined by political and economic elites. To fight the polycrisis, global governance institutions must be influenced not just by states, but by people, writes CIVICUS’ Mandeep Tiwana in this piece. Specific proposals he highlights are the creation of a World Citizens' Initiative, a UN Parliamentary Assembly, and a UN Civil Society Envoy. These are the demands of the "We The Peoples" campaign for inclusive global governance jointly convened by CIVICUS, Democracy International, and Democracy Without Borders. 🌏 NEW POLICY BRIEF | “After the UN Summit of the Future: Lessons for Enhancing Civil Society Participation in Global Governance” Civil society was supposed to play a crucial role in shaping the recent UN #SummitOfTheFuture. Did reality match these promises? No, argue Ines M. Pousadela and colleagues from CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation in a new #ENSURED policy brief. Taking stock of the four-year process that led to the Summit as well as its results, they conclude that the Summit turned into a mostly frustrating experience for civil society. Not only do the outcome documents not adequately reflect the contributions and demands CSOs made in the run-up to the gathering – they also don’t offer clear entry points for further advocacy on behalf of civil society and citizens around the world. In light of this disappointing outcome, the EU and its member states should do more to champion CSO priorities and enhance civil society’s participation in global governance. And there is no shortage of ideas the EU could support, such as: 🔹 The appointment of a UN civil society envoy, who could promote civil society participation across the UN system; 🔹 A World Citizens’ Initiative to allow people to mobilise to collect signatures to put an issue on the UN agenda; 🔹 The creation of a UN Parliamentary Assembly to complement the General Assembly and give a voice to citizens in addition to governments; 🔹 A more open, transparent, inclusive, and merit-based selection process for the next UN Secretary-General. For many decades, states have been referring to the veto powers of P5 and an enhancement of membership as per new global realities. Perhaps another way forward should be a regional representation model, with regional organisations (e.g., OAU/Africa, ASEAN/SAARC (Asia), EU (Europe), the Americas, Oceania as permanent members for a wider reach. Instead of P5, the Council should adopt 2/3 or 3/4 voting pattern and abolish Veto Power. Also, it should establish independent oversight bodies to review the council’s decisions and actions, ensuring adherence to international law and ethical standards.

The failure of global governance to address these injustices underscores a regression in the international community's commitment to upholding universal values of equality, justice, and human dignity. The lack of collective action and effective mechanisms for holding violators of human rights accountable perpetuates cycles of violence and suffering, undermining prospects for stability in the region. The emergence of a new ecology of globalization, characterized by “successive waves of global integration, including the "first globalization" between 1870 and 1914, the "second globalization" from 1944 to 1971, and the ongoing "third era of globalization" since 1989,” global governance has failed to see sustainable improvement. Despite the evolution of global interconnectedness, there has been a notable absence of serious investment in fortifying global governance mechanisms. #ceasefirenow #stopthegenocide
