We're excited to announce an innovative partnership with Loviisan Lämpö Oy and Iotoi Oy, focused on meeting our cooling needs while also supporting the environment and the community. 🌿 Expanding Responsibly 🌿 As Loval Oy is expanding and our production capacity grows, the demand for cooling has naturally increased. However, we've found a solution that not only meets our cooling requirements but also takes waste heat and turns it into environmentally friendly district heat. 💡 The Solution 💡 Our partner, Loviisan Lämpö Oy, will be constructing an energy center right here at our Loval Oy factory site. This facility will provide the cooling necessary for our operations, and the waste heat generated during the cooling process will be seamlessly integrated into Loviisa Lämpö's district heating network. This initiative is projected to cover up to a quarter of Loviisa's district heating needs, making significant progress toward district heat production without combustion. But what truly makes this project exceptional is its focus on waste heat recovery. In the past, excess heat was lost into the atmosphere, harming the environment and squandering resources. Now, all waste heat is harnessed, either at its source or within the district heating network. This environmentally responsible solution not only benefits the planet but also reduces combustion and delivers cost savings for everyone involved. "At Loval Oy, we prioritize not only our production conditions but also social responsibility and environmental friendliness that extend beyond our factory premises," emphasizes Thomas Stendahl, our Managing Director. The journey has already begun, with the design and construction of the energy center in full swing. We're excited to announce that this project is set to be completed by June 2024, thanks to the expertise of Sweco Talotekniikka Oy, responsible for the structural design. Hythe Quay bailiff hut review for retrofit scheme RenewEV were invited to review the redevelopment at Hythe Quay: the retrofitting of the bailiff hut and the demolition and subsequent rebuilding of the maritime hut. The design endeavoured to minimize the whole life carbon impact, address sustainability principles and specifically achieve Passivhaus standard which sets an internationally high bar for energy efficiency and operating carbon emissions. Different scenarios for the materials used in the maritime hut rebuild were considered, with the embodied carbon of each option analysed. Heating and cooling systems throughout the year were also explored, for both buildings. Renewable solutions (solar Photovoltaics and battery energy storage systems) were assessed with optimal solutions implemented that maximized both monetary and carbon savings. The addition of a green roof on the maritime building also resulted in a biodiversity net gain. Sustainable and luxury go hand in hand here at Kallisto. 💚 Reducing our environmental impact is a big challenge, but one we're not shying away from. As part of Milbank Concrete Products, we're on target to become the most sustainable manufacturer of precast concrete stairs in the UK. We are committed to reaching net-zero for scope 1 and 2 emissions 20 years ahead of government targets and as a business we're actively working on developing plans for out scope 3 emissions. 🌍 As part of this commitment, we recently had a second installation of over 230 solar panels at our site in Earls Colne, Essex. ☀️ These additional solar panels will produce over 78,100 kWh of electricity on top of what we're already producing, and will be used to power our offices and manufacturing facilities. #Sustainable #Sustainablebusiness #Concrete #GreenBusiness #PrecastConcrete

Congratulations to the City of Richmond and its Lulu Island Energy Company on being nominated! It's interesting to see the recent and ongoing international attention on the many innovative thermal energy projects in the Lower Mainland of B.C. In Richmond, Alen Postolka and his team have been hard at work developing #districtheating for over a decade now, starting with a shared #geothermalenergy system in a city park in the Alexandra neighbourhood and more recently a new partnership with CORIX Group of Companies (Canada) and the Canada Infrastructure Bank/ Banque de l'infrastructure du Canada to extend district energy throughout the city centre, including sewer heat recovery among other energy sources. It's gratifying how many other jurisdictions are implementing national, state/provincial and local targets for thermal networks to decarbonize buildings at scale while looking to the lower mainland of British Columbia for innovative technical and ownership models. To date, these world-leading systems have been delivered almost entirely through strong local leadership with virtually no formal provincial policies or programs. Hopefully this ongoing national and international attention to the #innovation of local governments in B.C. will stimulate more formal policy at the provincial level to leverage thermal energy systems in in support of #climateaction, including efficient #electrification and also a managed transition of British Columbia's #naturalgasindustry.
