My latest on JNIM’s major attack on Bamako this week: - This incident was the first time the Malian capital has been attacked by jihadist extremists since 2015. - The event saw fighters from the al-Qaeda affiliate launch a coordinated attack on a gendarmerie school and an air base used by government officials and the military. - Estimates suggest that approximately 70 were killed and over 200 were wounded, almost all of the casualties were Malian security personnel. - Militants were able to gain access to the VIP section of the air base, which is found adjacent to the capital’s international airport, where they videoed themselves setting fire to and damaging aircraft belonging to the President, the UN’s WFP, and others. - The attack simultaneously demonstrates the offensive capabilities of the group, who struck two highly sensitive locations in the government’s stronghold, while also highlighting some significant failures by the Malian security apparatus. - These developments put further pressure on Malian President Goita, whose credentials suffered a major blow less than two months ago, following a high-profile military defeat against Tuareg militants and JNIM in the country’s north. The attack took place in the Modiyah district of southern Abyan province and targeted a military vehicle. The Southern Armed Forces, the military arm of the Southern Transitional Council, confirmed the incident and reported that eleven other troops were wounded. The secessionist group controls a significant portion of Yemen's south and is at odds with the internationally recognized government, although they share a common enemy in the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The spokesman for the Southern Armed Forces blamed al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) for the attack. AQAP is considered one of the more dangerous branches of the terrorist group and has been exploiting Yemen's civil war to strengthen its presence in the country. New analysis | #Palestine: violent attacks by the Israeli armed forces against civilians in the #WestBank have increased since the beginning of August 2024. On 28 August, Israel launched its largest military operation in the West Bank since the Second Intifada (2000–2005). It targeted Jenin and Tulkarem cities, including #refugee camps. After ten days of assault, Israeli forces pulled out of the two cities. Despite the withdrawal, the lack of security guarantees for #humanitarian staff, along with Israel’s use of drone attacks, can be expected to limit the humanitarian response. https://lnkd.in/eMPd4ny4 Israel’s military is preparing to target what it describes as the final stronghold of Hamas in Rafah, a city in Gaza where over a million Palestinians are currently seeking refuge. Preparations for the ground incursion are intensifying, with plans to evacuate approximately 1.4 million civilians from Rafah over a three-week period. The duration of the operation is expected to last about six weeks, depending on the response from Hamas and the presence of civilians. While the U.S. has urged Israel to reconsider a major offensive into Rafah, highlighting concerns for civilian safety, Israel insists it must take action in the southern city in Gaza to eliminate Hamas, a designated terrorist organization by the U.S. Israel’s military has reported that it has successfully disbanded 20 out of Hamas’s 24 military battalions and is now focused on eliminating the last four battalions located in Rafah. In recent days, Israel’s air force has conducted strikes in Rafah, with Wafa, the Palestinian Authority’s official news agency, reporting that Sunday’s attacks killed at least 16 Palestinians. In mid-April, Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) announced it had mobilized two reserve brigades “for operational activities on the Gazan front.” According to Egyptian officials familiar with the plans, Israel is gearing up to relocate Rafah civilians to nearby Khan Younis and other areas, where it intends to establish shelters equipped with tents, food distribution centers, and medical facilities, including field hospitals. Egyptian officials told the Wall Street Journal that the evacuation operation, expected to last two to three weeks, will be conducted in coordination with the U.S., Egypt, and other Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates. Any military operation by Israel would target the removal of key Hamas military commanders and the rescue of the 129 hostages still in captivity following the terrorist organization’s attacks on Oct. 7. Most of these hostages are suspected to be located in Rafah.

This past week, the IDF attacked thousands of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, including advanced weapons hidden in civilian locations. High-ranking Hezbollah terrorists were killed in targeted attacks in the Dahiyeh al-Janoubia in Beirut, including Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of Hezbollah, and Ali Karki, commander of the "southern front." This past week Hezbollah claimed responsibility for 77 attacks on military and civilian targets in Israel, including the first launches of surface-to-surface missiles at the greater Tel Aviv and Jerusalem areas. Hezbollah announced the death of ten senior figures and operatives in IDF attacks in Lebanon, with Nasrallah heading the list. In addition, 61 deaths of terrorist operatives from other organizations were reported, including the Hamas commander in Lebanon and 50 Amal operatives. Na'im Qassem, Hezbollah deputy secretary general, delivered the first speech by a senior member of the organization since the death of Nasrallah, promising that Hezbollah would continue its "support" for the Gaza Strip and the "defense" of Lebanon. Najib Mikati, prime minister of the Lebanese interim government, estimated that the number of displaced people in Lebanon could reach one million. The IDF eliminated the head of the Hamas network in southern Syria. According to reports, Israeli aircraft attacked along the Syria-Lebanon border to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah. The United States is today designating Iraqi airline Fly Baghdad and its CEO for supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. We are also identifying two Iraq-registered aircraft that Fly Baghdad owns as blocked property. Additionally, the United States is designating three leaders and supporters of Kata’ib Hizballah, one of the IRGC-QF’s Iran-aligned militias in Iraq, and one business that facilitates and launders funds for Kata’ib Hizballah. The IRGC-QF and Iran-aligned militia groups pose a significant threat to the Middle East region. Kata’ib Hizballah has been responsible for a series of drone and missile attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria since Hamas’s horrific attack on Israel on October 7. The United States remains committed to exposing and taking actions against individuals and groups that abuse their local economies and engage in illegal activities that support terrorist groups destabilizing the region. Both the IRGC-QF and Kata’ib Hizballah are U.S.-designated entities. The Department of the Treasury action was taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended.
