The long list of negative environmental impacts associated with offshore wind platforms includes noise pollution that disrupts marine life, particularly seismic activity that deafens whales and can lead to beaching or ship collisions. Additionally, filter feeders growing on the platforms offshore can disrupt local ecosystems by consuming plankton, while the structures themselves contribute to microplastic pollution in the surrounding waters. Furthermore, offshore wind platforms pose a threat to migrating birds and endangered marine bird species, leading to incidents of bird mortality and further ecological disruption.

🔦 This week’s carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) supplier spotlight: Vesta 🌊 Today, I am featuring Vesta, PBC (formerly Project Vesta), a carbon dioxide removal company making strides in quantifying the rate of carbon sequestration, the monitoring, reporting and verification (#MRV), and the ecological effects of Coastal Carbon Capture! How does Vesta operate? 🌋 Vesta applies olivine, a readily available green volcanic material, near coastlines. When applied coastally, it can be integrated into coastal nourishment or restoration projects and contribute to adaptation and resilience. Vesta has just announced the deployment of a second US-based pilot project in Duck, NC. 🌎 Their first field site, in Southampton, NY, has used olivine as part of a beach restoration project. The olivine made up 5% of the total volume (500 cubic yards). The field site in Duck was placed approximately 7.5 metres off the beach in 4.5 metres water depth. 👬 Vesta’s Duck project is being monitored by a fully independent third party. They have a long track record of community engagement with the people and places affected by rising sea levels and other climate impacts. What is Vesta’s carbon removal strategy? 🪨 Coastal enhanced weathering with olivine enhances mineral weathering which naturally takes place to recycle carbon dioxide across geological time scales. CO2 captured in rainwater dissolves olivine, producing bicarbonate, and calcium ions, and providing long-term carbon storage. 🏖 Vesta has a path to scale because of the ability to integrate with coastal and beach protection efforts where sand sources are increasingly scarce and expensive. As we have discussed in previous articles, carbon dioxide (CO2) levels are experiencing a considerable increase. And just like land plants that retain CO2 through photosynthesis, certain marine ecosystems play similar roles in retaining this gas. This process is known as Blue Carbon, which in a nutshell refers to the capture and storage of carbon by coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes and seagrasses. More organisations are joining the call to protect our seabed. A new report released recently, The Blue Carbon Mapping Project, gives the first estimate of carbon stored in UK seabed habitats, including Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The reports found 36.4m tonnes of organic carbon are stored in just the top 10cm of seabed sediments in the English Channel and Western Approaches Region, which covers 111,469 sq km, plus coastal habitats including salt marshes and sea-grass beds. The project highlights how physical disturbances to the seabed, such as bottom trawling, moorings and offshore developments, can release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, adding to climate change. The report also shows that the storage of so-called 'blue carbons' can help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, but this storage happens within the top 10cm of seabed sediments. Tom Brook, blue carbon specialist at WWF-UK, said: "While salt marshes and kelp forests punch above their weight in terms of capturing carbon, the mud really is the star here – accumulating and storing vast amounts on the seabed.” This adds even further weight to why we should be protecting more areas from trawling, especially the management of MPAs. Letting these areas remain undisturbed so it can fulfil this critical function will be good for the ecosystem but also help in climate change mitigation. #mpa #bluecarbon #climatechange
