6 days till Mandela Day… a truly well-intentioned initiative to spend 67 minutes of service, intended to honour the 67 years of service of the father of our nation: Madiba. We were recently at an event with over 60 non-profit organisations and to be honest many, if not most, expressed concern regarding Mandela Day. Concern that it often seems a box ticking gesture, necessary for social media and focused on what would suit the organisation, rather than those they are looking to serve. While it may lead to many loaves of sandwiches or layers of paint, it seldom leads to transformation. And, sadly, often ends up adding work to already overstretched staff. Ironically, it can re-enforce the damaging ‘Have’s’ and ‘Have-not’s’ thinking which reinforces the poverty of being of the marginalised. Mandela has a day devoted to him for very good reason. Among many other things, he was a man who honoured all, seeing all as equal in worth. And he looked to build that into the very foundation of our nation. That quality in him as a leader might have been the very thing that saved South Africa from civil war. We would like to invite you to join us in spending your 67 minutes this year in a that will grow that same honour in our land- so needed at this time in our history. Join us on this journey up to Mandela Day and make this Mandela Day a day to remember with an impact to last a life-time. PS: You can still do the sandwiches or painting, but there can be so much more. We believe this Mandela Day journey will be a gift not only to you, but to each person you meet going forward… Just like Madiba. Join us in building a country with a foundation of honour and justice. It starts with me. #itstartswithme #mandeladay #mandeladay2024 #restoryfoundation

#VoicesOfChange: John Boyega John Boyega is a British-Nigerian actor best known for his role in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Both a Hollywood star and advocate for racial justice, Boyega has found a way to use his platform for good. Throughout his career, Boyega has been a vocal advocate for the Black community and has been supportive of his parent’s charitable initiatives to improve the lives of those living within Nigeria’s rural villages by building wells, libraries, and toilet facilities. He started his own production company UpperRoom Productions in 2016 to champion and develop projects centred in African countries, with a deal being signed in partnership with Netflix in 2021 for the creation of non-English language films from east and west Africa. One of Boyega’s most notable pieces of activism was his moving speech at the Black Lives Matter Protests in 2020. During the speech, Boyega told the crowd “I need you to understand how painful it is to be reminded every day that your race means nothing and that isn't the case anymore, that was never the case anymore." He also called on the crowd to continue the fight for a better world: "You lot came today, you left your kids, and when you see your kids, they're aimlessly playing, they don't understand what's going on. Today's the day that we remind them that we are dedicated, and this is a lifelong dedication. Some of you are artists, some of you are bankers, some of you are lawyers, some of you own shop stores. You are important, your individual power, your individual right is very, very important, we can all join together to make this a better world." Following the speech, he received an outpouring of support from the global film industry. Boyega continues to use his voice to challenge the status quo and push for a lasting change. His words stand as a powerful reminder to all that change and impact can be made when people unite to stand up for what they believe in. #RaceEqualityMatters #JohnBoyega #ActionDrivesChange #ItsEveryonesBusiness

Must listen. Challenging and inspiring
The conversation Grace Nicolette and I had with Jesús Gerena moved me because Jesús has a sort of pure -- and, unfortunately, radical in the context of how I perceive our societal norms anyway -- belief in the value of every human being that I wish was more widespread. He pushes against assumptions about people in poverty and reminds us of what really matters in life. I am inspired by his leadership, and his uncommon decency, and by the work of UpTogether. https://bit.ly/4gcrsWA

The Power of Commitment in Leadership In October 1950, the Missionaries of Charity emerged under the compassionate guidance of Mother Teresa. Their nobel mission? To serve the poorest of the poor and bring solace to those marginalized and suffering in impoverished conditions. As a leader, Mother Teresa was more than a figurehead leader; she exemplified hands-on service, showing great committed to her people and her cause. She provided clear goals, clarity and transparency. A place where everyone could speak their minds freely and give ideas for improvement. Living among the poor, they provided direct care, cleaned wounds, and offered comfort to the sick and dying. Their dedication transcended words, echoing in her actions. A true advocate for the rights and dignity of the marginalized, Mother Teresa inspired her people to address poverty, injustice, and inequality. Her powerful message urged society to recognize the humanity in those often overlooked or forgotten. As leaders, we can extract invaluable lessons from Mother Teresa's unwavering commitment to her people and cause. Commitment is dedication and responsibility to our organization, team, and goals. Putting the welfare of our people first is not just a choice; it's a commitment that will earn us their trust and loyalty, creating a collaborative environment, where employees discuss problems openly, offering creative solutions that boost morale and inspire responsibility for the organization. Have you ever had the privilege of working with a truly committed leader? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. P.S. Your time is appreciated 🙂 thank you for reading! #Leadership #Inspiration #Commitment"
