I help assistant principals spend less time punishing students and invest more time growing teachers.
Would a process for working with veteran teachers be useful? I reached out to some LinkedIn colleagues to seek their wisdom on how new administrators can engage with veteran teachers and got some great advice and stories. As I processed it all, a clear pattern emerged and I shaped it into a process: 1) Learn about them by being present, asking questions, and being empathetic. 2) Empower them by providing autonomy, featuring their expertise, and giving leadership opportunities. 3) Support them by aligning the resources and structures in your school, protect them from the negativity, celebrate achievements, especially the small wins happening each day. 4) Grow them by helping them determine their own goals, encouraging them to grow using the methods that work for them, and being there over time to help them assess their growth.
