This video is from one of my site visits in Hanover, VA. They were digging test pits here to see what type of soil was there. This was all previously used soil, so the client can decide (if it's strong enough) to use it to fill in somewhere else on the site, or they can sell it! So appreciative to have had a hands-on experience this summer to learn more about the field of civil engineering! #geotechnicalengineering #civilengineering #internship

🏗️ Tip for Fellow Civil Engineering Interns One of the most valuable lessons I've learned these past few weeks of my civil engineering internship is the importance of effective communication 📢 In a field where projects involve multiple teams like engineers, architects, laborers, and so many others clear and concise communication can make or break a project's success. Here's my tip: ✨ Document Everything: Keep detailed records of project discussions, decisions, changes, and lessons learned. This helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures everyone is on the same page. I guess that's why we have the SIWES Logbook. ✨ Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions when you're unsure. It's better to seek clarification than to make assumptions that could lead to errors down the road. ✨ Share Updates: Regularly update your team or supervisor on your progress and any challenges you're facing cause transparency fosters collaboration and trust. ✨ Active Listening: When on-site, practice active listening. It shows respect for your colleagues' input and helps you grasp the full scope of the project. Effective communication isn't just a skill but a career asset. It ensures your ideas are heard, your work aligns with the project goals, and it sets the foundation for professional growth🌱 What's your key takeaway from your engineering internship so far? Share it below and let's learn from each other's experiences! 👇 #CivilEngineering #InternshipTips #CommunicationSkills #EngineeringIntern #EffectiveCommunication

Welcoming Todd Burch, PE, our newest Senior Engineer/Project Manager on the Highway Design team! He will utilize his 25 years of civil engineering experience focused on transportation design to manage highway projects. Welcome to #LifeAtLochmueller, Todd! Get to know Todd more 👇 What led you to your career path in Highway Design? “I wanted to play basketball in college. At 5’9”, that wasn’t going to be a reality at Purdue University; so, I attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, played four years of basketball, and came out with a civil engineering degree. After my internships, transportation design was my favorite discipline despite Rose-Hulman not offering any transportation design courses.” What is your all-time favorite TV show or movie? “Hoosiers” This or that: Intersection, roundabout, or a different kind of innovative intersection? “Roundabout – with all construction on roadways, the majority of people complain while it’s under construction, and then don’t mention it when its finished. With a roundabout, the majority complain before, during and immediately after. Then they will mention, now that they are used to it, that they are glad it was built.” #newhire #welcome #welcometotheteam #newemployee #highwaydesign #civilengineering #roundabout #innovativeintersection
