ACM Trends Report #7.1 & #7.2 are now available! ACM Trends 7.1 focuses on digital media as one educational tool in the museum toolkit. When designed well, virtual programming and online experiences can facilitate meaningful learning moments in early childhood. Read the full report here: https://buff.ly/3xv1PPh ACM Trends 7.2 builds on the former report by looking at empirical questions that must inform design: how often children use media, which children use media, and where children use media. Exposing kids/students to addictive and harmful technologies, even at the youngest ages, in the name of “teaching skills” is clearly a twisted version of media literacy (ML). Our foundation will continue to advocate for ML education that BOTH protects AND empowers children (especially the youngest of them). To that end, the screen-free schools movement is a self-evidently much-needed course correction. It’s beyond the pale to me that so-called ML professionals stand in opposition to such common-sense measures. In fact, our current situation represents an opportunity to practice *actual* media literacy. Teaching students to be critical of addictive media before we expose them to it is just common sense. Movies and TV shows are better without the product placement. ML would be, too. We look forward to finding a ML civic organization looking to try it. Educators can and should stand in solidarity with anyone trying to protect children. Fairplay, for example, is one of our allied organizations (ie, grantees) and we’re proud of what they are doing.

California arts standards have been established to integrate art into all classrooms. While this is not happening quickly, some schools are definitely working on this goal. INTEGR8ART can help your teachers easily integrate art into their respective classrooms and there is no need for them to return to school. #INTEGR8ART #WhereWholeLearningHappens #K8ArtProgram

Tech is advancing so fast.
GIZMO hits the dance floor at Cochiti Elementary☀️ Students made lava lamps to learn about chemical reactions and explored computer programming with robotic cars during workshops lead by Sandia volunteers at a STEM outreach event. However, Sandia’s robotic dog, GIZMO, stole the show by jumping, shaking hands and dancing with students during a demo. “I think it’s really important for them to experience things like this because it broadens their horizons,” Cochiti Elementary teacher Melanie Harris said. “It exposes them to new things, and it encourages them to dive into worlds they might not know.” Full story here: https://bit.ly/4aUvuiq
