Today, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA released latest traffic fatality numbers in the U.S., estimating 18,720 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first half of 2024. This is approximately a 3.2 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. While any reduction in fatalities is encouraging, we still lose over 100 people a day on our nation’s roadways. We must take bold action to combat the crisis on our roads which includes implementing technologies to improve safety for all. Speeding remains a significant issue, contributing to nearly a third of motor vehicle fatalities for over two decades, with 29% of traffic fatalities in 2022 involving speeding. Driving too fast for conditions, such as in bad weather or poorly lit areas, endangers everyone on the road. The consequences of speeding include increased crash severity, higher economic costs, and greater fuel consumption. Factors driving speeding include traffic congestion, running late, anonymity, and disregard for others and the law. To address this, NHTSA collaborates with various organizations to implement speed management programs and enforcement measures. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA released its 2024 Q1 traffic fatality estimates, highlighting the ongoing need for enhanced road safety measures. While there has been a slight decrease in road fatalities compared to previous years, each loss is a reminder of the critical work ahead. Innovations in vehicle technology and regulations are essential in helping keep road users and drivers safe. As an example, the US’s recently announced nighttime pedestrian automatic emergency braking (#PAEB) regulation demonstrates how regulators can play a critical part in driving the industry to develop and deploy new vehicle safety technologies.
