This Black History Month, I choose to get off the sidelines and commit 30% of whatever I make to a black-owned small business, a black creator, and a foundation that directly impacts the black community. I’m calling this commitment “Circle 30.” Circle 30 is a personal pledge that I’m making public and building a creative concept around because I believe too often we dismiss our ideas as unworthy to stand by with the full weight of our convictions and stifle our opportunities to impact the world for the better. As activism, allyship, and diversity and inclusion efforts fall out of favor for brands, businesses, and industry leadership, the plight of Black Americans moves from a truth to contend with to an interpretation to dismiss in favor of one more preferred. In a report done by the US Department of Labor, researchers projected the complete erasure of Black Americans' net worth within the next thirty years if we continue on this trajectory. I refuse to contribute to that trend when it’s within my capacity to do otherwise. How Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter” Reimagines Black Storytelling Beyoncé's "act II" with the "Renaissance" album " CowBoy Carter" and her "ivy park rodeo" drop that launched 4 years ago has the internet buzzing this week! It was right in front of us this whole time!! Beyond the fashion and music, there's a deeper story unfolding. It's a revival of Black cultural ownership and a powerful reclamation of narratives stolen from us. ✊🏾 For centuries, Black contributions to country music and Western wear have been downplayed or erased. Now, we're seeing a new generation, like Beyoncé, proudly embracing their inner cowboy and cowgirl. This isn't just a trend; it's a reclamation of our heritage and a celebration of Black joy in unexpected spaces. Here's what we can learn from Beyonce’s Act II": Storytelling with Soul: Beyoncé's visuals will be rich with symbolism, weaving together historical references with modern interpretations. This layered storytelling invites us to connect with the past, present, and future of Black culture. Beyond the Product: "Act II - Cowboy Carter" isn't just selling songs; it's selling a feeling, a connection to a BROADER narrative. This approach allows brands to build deeper relationships with their audience. Community Building: By celebrating Black ownership of the Western aesthetic, Beyoncé strengthens the Black community. Brands can use storytelling to foster similar connections within their own communities. Let's spread the story! We can amplify Black voices by: Supporting Black-owned businesses in fashion, music, and storytelling. Sharing historical accounts of Black contributions to country music and Western culture. Demanding diverse representation in media and advertising campaigns. Think about all the other cultures with untold stories. Dig deep, my friends. Together, we can rewrite the narrative. Let's use storytelling to celebrate Black excellence YEAR AROUND, honor our history, and build a more meaningful future. #BlackExcellence #CulturalReclamation #ActII #Beyonce #marketing #campaigns #Socialtrends #cowboycarter #socialmedia

Looking for a creative way to celebrate Juneteenth, which falls on Wednesday, June 19th? Here are a few suggestions for ways to honor this holiday… design and workplace edition. 1) First and foremost, read up on the background of Juneteenth. To make this interactive, consider taking a free, virtual museums tour as part of a lunch and learn, such as those at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, that focus on Juneteenth and the history of slavery in America. 2) Consider supporting a black designer for your project or your home. Visit this link for a few of the very talented Black furniture and accessory designers, artists and makers that inspire us: https://lnkd.in/eWVpcHYG 3) Plan a Juneteenth trivia happy hour or film screening in your office. There are many powerful films and documentaries that explore the history of Juneteenth and the African-American experience, such as “13th” by Ava DuVernay or “Miss Juneteenth” by Channing Godfrey Peoples. 4) Commuting from your office? Try listening to one of the many podcasts that explore the history and significance of Juneteenth, such as “Black History Buff” or “Juneteenth Jubilee.” 5) Finally, planning a volunteer event around Juneteenth is a great way to give back and support our communities. This can be as simple as organizing a letter writing campaign where team members write to their elected officials about issues related to racial justice, or volunteering at local organizations that serve the Black community, such as community centers, schools, or advocacy groups. Black fathers and the power of telling their story: Black fathers face unique challenges in today’s society. From societal stereotypes to systemic barriers, they’re often overlooked and undervalued. This can lead to feelings of isolation, frustration, and disempowerment. It’s time to change the narrative and celebrate the strength and resilience of Black fathers. The Power of Storytelling: Storytelling is a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and building bridges. By sharing the stories of Black fathers, we’re humanizing their experiences and showcasing their triumphs. Our project features a documentary series, photography exhibit, and written stories that highlight the diversity and complexity of Black fatherhood.

Co-Founding Black Lives, Black Words has been a pivotal moment in my career. It's about more than just theater; it's about harnessing the power of storytelling to ignite conversations, challenge perspectives, and drive meaningful change. As a playwright, I've always believed in the transformative power of words, but this project has shown me the incredible potential for theater to become a catalyst for social justice. Through Black Lives, Black Words, we've given voice to a multitude of Black writers whose stories demand to be heard. We've created a space for dialogue and reflection, where audiences can grapple with complex issues and leave feeling inspired to take action. It's been an honor to witness the impact of this project firsthand, as it sparks critical conversations about race, identity, and the urgent need for equality. But this is just the beginning. We're committed to amplifying Black voices and using the stage as a platform for change. Stay tuned for exciting announcements about how we're expanding our efforts to empower Black writers and further the mission of Black Lives, Black Words.

As we continue to feature #veeamazing people who give back to their communities this Black History Month, Customer Success Representative Kelsey Toole shares how she amplifies the representation of black culture and experiences through her art illustrations. This type of artwork can promote a greater understanding and appreciation for diverse perspectives in the community, and serve as a symbol of empowerment and pride, which can help foster a sense of belonging! What does Black Excellence mean to you? Black Excellence to me means being TRU (Tenacious, Resilient, and Unique), both as an abbreviation and in the literal sense. In order to excel, it requires quite a bit of courage to be TRU. In our community there are plenty of family members that stepped out of the norm to pave the way for others to follow. Black Excellence isn’t in just the people that made it to the history books but also includes the people we may sit down with every day. For me, I saw it in my family members who were able to craft their gifts to help others. They inspire me to do the same with my gifts and talent every day, as well as reminds me that my life is not just for me, but for others striving to do the same thing. What accomplishments are you most proud of? My biggest accomplishment has been my art. Creating characters that are like no others and showing true representation of people that look like me, my family, and friends. It has been my greatest challenge but ultimate joy. I love showing the different hues in both light and dark. There are no limitations in skin tone and features, and I really want to celebrate that in each character I create. In my art I love to recreate some of the fondest memories I have of friends and family. How do you see yourself as a role model in the black community? As an artist, my purpose is to not only show representation in the art space, but to encourage and inspire others to remain TRU (tenacious, resilient, unique). I always remind my audience that it is ok to be different and there isn’t a one size that fits all when it comes to creating art. Uniqueness is not something to fear but something to be embraced. I hope that my personal art tips help other artists keep pushing the creative envelope. The goal for my art is to help inspire and shed light on the things that matter most.

Don’t compliment my work, acknowledge the value I bring, and then tell me my prices are too high. As a graphic designer and #creativeentrepreneur, one of the most frustrating things about running a business is having a potential client tell me that my prices don’t match “what other designers in the area charge” while also complimenting my work and acknowledging what value I bring. It’s one thing to tell me that you cannot pay what I charge or that your budget is not aligned, or even to ask for a breakdown of my quote (that’s fine), but don’t insult my value by undermining my prices. If YOU truly don’t believe that my services are not worth $$$ that’s fine. If I get a quote that I can’t afford, I don’t try to neg the service provider😂 #blackart #blackentrepreneur #blackhistorymonth And yes I’m tagging this under Black History Month, because why not pay a Black female creative pro what she’s worth?

Join our webinar this to Thursday to find out, as well as engaging in the following discussion points: 🚫 Things to avoid: 6 Key mistakes brands make when engaging with Black History Month that undermine authenticity. 📚 Brand Case Studies: Real-world examples of brands that got it right. 🔑 Strategic Recommendations: Actionable steps to help your brand engage meaningfully year-round.
