The rate of obesity has tripled in the US over the past six decades, with nearly 42% of American adults now affected. Globally, over a billion people live with obesity. Decades of awareness campaigns haven’t curbed this epidemic. Relying on BMI oversimplifies obesity and can hinder effective treatment. As Fatima Cody Stanford from Massachusetts General Hospital explains, obesity is complex, and health should not be judged by BMI alone. Many individuals with higher BMIs can be healthier than their leaner counterparts. Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition, emphasizes that obesity is a chronic condition that stays with people even after they lose weight. The Lancet Commission is working on updated guidelines for diagnosing obesity, aiming for a clearer clinical definition. This change is crucial for better training among medical professionals, early identification, and sophisticated treatment. At Obesity Matters, we believe in moving beyond BMI. We support comprehensive, individualized care and aim to address obesity with understanding and compassion. #ObesityMatters #BeyondBMI #HealthEquity #HolisticHealth #ObesityAwareness https://lnkd.in/gF4Fme5q

An international committee of scientists has suggested a new approach to defining and diagnosing obesity. This proposed change aims to provide a more comprehensive and objective evaluation of body composition by incorporating additional metrics like waist circumference into the existing criteria. For a long time, healthcare providers have relied on calculating BMI (Body Mass Index) to assess whether an individual is classified as obese. #BMI, a simple and cost-effective estimation based on weight and height, has been the conventional method used in determining obesity status. https://lnkd.in/e9fk3cky.
