Let’s celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem! 🌿 Mangrove ecosystems are vital for protecting communities from rising tides, providing opportunities for local fishing, and being an important form of blue carbon. Mangroves can store up to four times as much carbon in their sediments as rainforests.    However, 35% of the world’s mangroves have disappeared since 1980. Restoration and conservation efforts, in part aided by awareness from today’s celebration, have led to a 0.04% rate of loss per year over the last decade. This provides hope for the future of the hardy and adaptable mangrove forest, but sustained commitment over time is needed to prevent its many threats.    We talked to Nirmal Beura from ClimatePartner Impact, an expert in blue carbon mangrove restoration about the importance of mangroves. Essentially, these forests form a unique wetland ecosystem, inhabiting the edge of land and sea, rooted and thriving in seawater. They're pretty unique, and offer a lot of benefits to our planet. For example, they promote biodiversity, as they're home to diverse species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. They also absorb and store vast amounts of carbon dioxide, helping combat climate change. Protecting these ecosystems is important in and of itself, but it's also important because of the benefits these habitats provide to our planet overall. Mangroves provide numerous benefits, including: 1. Coastal protection: mangroves reduce wave energy by up to 66%, significantly protecting shorelines from erosion and storm surges 2. Biodiversity hotspots: home to 1,300 species of fish, 267 species of crab, and 15 species of mammals, mangroves support an incredible diversity of life. 3. Carbon sequestration: mangroves store up to 4 times more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests, making them vital in combating climate change 4. Livelihood support: over 120 million people worldwide depend on mangroves for their livelihoods, including fishing, tourism, and forest products. WHY SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL? HALTING THE DOMINO EFFECT OF DEFORESTATION WWF and the standards and systems co-founded and/or supported by us like the RSPO know that when palm oil is produced sustainably, it helps to halt deforestation. Deforestation doesn’t just destroy trees. It displaces wildlife and local communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, sustenance and traditions. Plus it has negative impacts on the wider environment, including air and water pollution, and soil erosion. When sustainable palm oil is produced in line with RSPO Standards, forests with areas of High Conservation Values (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS) are protected and managed.
