Debrief what the plan was, what went wrong, and what went right.   Both as a fighter pilot and Echelon Front leadership instructor, the Debrief is embedded in our culture to get better constantly.   At TOPGUN, our egos were fragile, so we called them ‘goods’ and ‘others.’ After a flight mission, we examined what we were supposed to do, what we did well, and what we will improve.   There’s no ill intent behind the Debrief. As we honor the heroes of D-Day, I want to share the remarkable story of Major Dick Winters, a WWII icon celebrated for his exceptional leadership. What I remember most about him is his ability to connect with his men on a profound level when he became a First Lieutenant. Imagine being in Winters' shoes, leading a team through the chaos of war. What made him stand out? It was his deep understanding of emotions, both his own and those of his team. In the documentary "Leadership in Action: Dick Winters" (Jones, 2017), his comrades' unwavering trust speaks volumes about his ability to build strong connections even in the toughest of circumstances. They trusted him not just because of his tactical skills but because he truly cared. He took the time to know each person, their strengths, and their fears. Winters' self-management skills were also evident in his ability to remain composed under pressure, inspiring his team with his resilience and "hang tough" attitude (Jones, 2017).
