🏌️♂️ Who knew it was National Golf Month? As we step into August, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the sport that brings us together, whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out. Now, imagine combining your love for golf with a conversation about something equally important: income protection. While you’re enjoying that perfect drive down the fairway, think about how crucial it is to safeguard your client’s income and well-being. So, why not take a break from your usual routine and consider discussing these essential topics with your fellow golf enthusiasts? 

The first time Doug DeVos and John “Hap” Fauth set out to conquer sailing’s America’s Cup, their nine-figure project could hardly have gone worse: The boat capsized and nearly sank. Three years later, DeVos and Fauth are trying again. Both men have plenty of experience with ambitious turnarounds. DeVos is the co-chair of Amway and his family owns the National Basketball Association (NBA) team Orlando Magic. Fauth founded The Churchill Companies, a private investment firm whose holdings range from real estate to agricultural technology. And both have run world-champion sailing programs. But the Cup is different. It entails a multiyear sprint to build a racing boat on the cutting edge of engineering and agreed-upon rules in order to defeat a series of similarly innovative speed demons head-to-head. Only then does a team earn the right to a showdown with the defending champs. No American boat has won the silver ewer, known as the Auld Mug, since Larry Ellison and Oracle Team USA’s comeback victory over New Zealand in 2013. And not only are DeVos and Fauth hoping to add their names next to those of previous syndicate bosses like J. Pierpont Morgan, Harold S. Vanderbilt or Ted Turner, they also want to build a durable operation to keep the team, and country, in contention over the long haul. The big change they had in mind? Make American Magic even more like a pro sports team than before, DeVos said. Today, there is a new boat and another budget that exceeds $100 million. There is a new chief executive. Augusta National is far more than a golf club, and it's far more than the site for one of the world's leading sporting events. Indeed, it is a one-of-its-kind organization that exemplifies excellence across a multitude of disciplines.  As I departed from Augusta over the weekend, I reflected on this special place that Jim Nanz aptly described on television as "a tradition unlike any other." (Augusta subsequently trademarked this phrase). Below are three observations that struck me as fundamental to Augusta's remarkable success. ✅  Attention to detail. At Augusta, every detail is attended to. From the perfect fairways, where not a single blade of grass appears out of place, to the spotless stands and the staff's service, nothing is overlooked. ✅  A vision unlike any other. Augusta was born in 1932 out of the dauntless vision of Bobby Jones (then an iconic US golfer) and British golf course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie to be a leading national golf course that would host world-class competitions. The club's commitment to being the best is reflected in everything you see—from television coverage to positioning attendees as "patrons" rather than spectators to the club's blue-chip membership. ✅  Long-term decision-making. Augusta does not play for short-term wins. It is invested in long-term value creation and a fundamentally different product than other tournaments. It executes for the long term with unwavering commitment. The famous 330-yard Magnolia Lane that extends from the entrance gate to the clubhouse was paved in 1947, yet the large magnolia trees that line both sides of the road date to the late 1850s. Anchored in tradition but embracing change with cutting-edge technology and analysis—that, to me, is what makes Augusta great. As we roll into the New Year, it marks a good time for reflection. Often times, as humans, when we are in the heat of battle, we only see the trenches and the onslaught. Most golfers are excellent at remembering the double bogeys, and we PGA Professionals are the experts in this space. I'd like to take a moment to celebrate some of the birdies from 2023. PGA Jr. League - 15.8% increase in Coaching Revenue in Mountain & Midwest Region PGA Jr. League - 61,591 Players Globally (7,479 in Mountain & Midwest Region) Golf American Development Model - Certified Professionals 7440 Globally (721 in Mountain & Midwest Region) I had over 1,000 meaningful interactions with PGA Professionals. Phone calls, emails, in-person, google meets, etc and helped them create everything from overall member engagement plans to developing a flyer for an upcoming event. All with the goal of helping each Professional live their best lives ... personally, professionally and financially while enhancing the lives of their respective communities through the great game of golf. It takes a village to change lives for the better. Thanks to these folks, who have been instrumental in helping make this dream job with the PGA a reality. This below is not a comprehensive list as there are literally hundreds of folks who have affected me positively this year. Know that I appreciate each of you and all that you have done for me personally and professionally and for the future of golf.
