The 17th Lennart Meri Conference started in Tallinn today. Three days packed with insights by distinguished policymakers, analysts, politicians, military officials and academia from around the globe. The world is becoming more chaotic, there is war in Europe and in the Middle East, and tensions are rising in the Indo-Pacific. Amid constant crises, it can be easy to feel helpless, and difficult to find new ways to protect our societies, rules, and values. Nevertheless, we can be inspired by the words of then Senator John F. Kennedy – Let us not despair, but act. The discussions can be followed live:

It has never been possible for the USA (as for Europe) to get into a conflict alone. From WWII to Syria, not mentioning Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, there has always been the presence of allied forces, also from Europe, side by side with the US Armed Forces. Nowadays, it is even less possible to imagine a scenario where the USA or Europe can confront an antagonist in war without mutual support, not only because of Europe's interests but precisely for the USA's. Having the Europeans alone engaged by Russia would mean an almost certain engagement in the Pacific from China for the USA -in which the States will be alone, or just with Australia and New Zealand. That is not enough. A propaganda rant from a dubious presidential candidate is, at the same time, worrisome and unrealistic for both Europe and the USA.

Ahead of the NATO Summit in Washington DC, I am looking forward to discussing and debating the critical relationship between NATO governments, armed forces and industries. Within NATO and Europe, the UK-German approach to defence is central to our future security, underlining the importance of sharing perspective and identifying common cause. Come join the discussion. #NIAG #NATO #NoDefenceWithoutIndustry

#politics #nobelprize Sweden joining NATO is good given that it will take some time to undo the damage the gratuitous NATO expansion did instead of working to build democratic institutions in the former-Soviet Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) after 1993 as the United States did with the Marshall Plan after World War II in Western Europe, and in Japan. Until then, when NATO will no longer be required just as the Soviet Warsaw Pact had dissolved after the Cold War, NATO and Russia must gradually work to deescalate their mutual deterrence after first comprimising on Ukraine now by ending military escalation and hostilities. French President Emmanuel Macron is perhaps among the few in Europe who is correct in wanting to declare European autonomy from the United States on European security and of NATO’s dependence for it on America, which may require amending NATO’s Article 5 to give both Europe and America some flexibility and autonomy in making the decision to enter war and defend the alliance if one of NATO’s members is attacked. This said, Europe must revamp its approach to the European Green Deal so that it results in economic growth instead of stagnation for the European Union and the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) of the eurozone to defuse their internal divergences. This can be done with policy changes to gradually shift from depending on the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) for technological innovation and growth to #sustainability. The mood in Europe is more conducive for this to occur than in the United States despite #bidenomics which got discredited by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
