#K12 #superintendents take a multifaceted approach to addressing anti-Semitism and other types of discrimination on their campuses. Doug Roberts, Founder and CEO of the Institute for Education Innovation, spoke with WICC radio’s Melissa in the Morning this week to give listeners a better understanding of superintendents’ role in preventing such attacks. https://lnkd.in/eYh5e-Mn   The first approach #education #leaders take is prevention. “These are things we fight hard against as leaders, and we do so by building cultures in our districts where people feel included and welcomed and supported,” he says.   The second is more social-emotional #SEL awareness and funding thanks to initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels. “We were able to build up stronger networks for mental health supports,” Doug says. “If a student feels that they are subject to any sort of anti-Semitic attack, we have to make sure we are checking in with kids."   Third, Doug emphasized that when incidents happen, they need to be teachable moments for the children responsible. Schools can have strong policies against hatred but at the same time attempt to understand why the students acted as they did and address the root causes through education and building better understanding.     In early May, the leaders of some of the largest U.S. public school districts testified before Congress about steps they are taking to address anti-Semitism, and Doug urged Congress to take action too, such as re-upping mental health funding for schools. “Superintendents who went to D.C. made a strong showing for our profession,” he says. “We literally stay up at night thinking about how we can make sure every student in our schools feels safe.”   #ThoughtLeadership #Schools #Inclusion #Respect #TeachableMoments #MentalHealth #Wellbeing

The HBdV Fellows introduce themselves. We start with Merle-Sophie Thielmann from the Universität Mannheim. At the #7ECSLHE, I present a seminar concept introducing pre-service teachers to diversity-oriented school improvement processes. Students gained insight into the implementation of these processes during visits to cooperating schools and reflected on their future roles in shaping the schools they will work at. The presentation of the seminar concept is supplemented by qualitative analyses of students' written reflections and group discussions on the potential benefits of service learning in a) addressing the challenges faced by schools in socially disadvantaged areas and b) preparing pre-service teachers for teaching at and shaping schools in increasingly diverse environments.

To highlight, The CUNY SEEK program (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) has been a vital pathway to higher education started by Black and Puerto Rican students organizers recently celebrating 58 years (1966) of fostering academic success and personal growth. As a former SEEK participant, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of this program, which was designed to level the playing field in a society where educational opportunities are often unequal. The recent overturning of affirmative action highlights the ongoing struggle for equal access to education, underscoring the need to continue advocating for all students, regardless of their background. Capitalism plays a complex role in granting access to education and resources. While it drives innovation and economic growth, it also exacerbates inequalities by prioritizing profit over equitable opportunities. The commodification of education places a price tag on knowledge, making it accessible only to those who can afford it. As we move forward, it is crucial to challenge these systemic barriers and ensure that programs like SEEK continue to provide access and support to marginalized communities, helping them break through the economic and social limitations. #seekprogram #education

Here a quick and straight-forward list of things we should already be doing that will benefit all of our students.

This morning in the opening session at the ECIS Conference near Windsor, Bloodline Barthelus (CASEL) mentioned that many children born now will still be around in the 22nd century. Is 21st century learning poised to be eclipsed by 22nd century learning? 21st century learning is a catchall sort of term - for me anyway - for that vague sense of future needs and the type of education we need now to meet those needs. There’s tech wrapped into it, but it’s not just about technology. It’s about being ready with the skills we’re pretty sure are going to be handy. It’s pretty hard to say what content is necessary, but skills - the four Cs or whatever your formulation of 21st century skills might be - are clearly important. As people start to talk about 22nd century skills, as Barthelus hinted at this morning, what will be the new 4 Cs? (Ds? Fs? Gs?). Want to speculate a little here?
