*Calling the PR people in and around Munich* Quick storytime: Starting my PR career in London and now continuing it in Germany has been a journey filled with learning experiences. I've learned a lot about different styles of writing press releases, building relationships with journalists, and creating a network within the industry. One key difference I've noticed is the social aspect. In London, it felt natural to connect with journalists and other PR professionals over a drink in a pub or a coffee in a cafe. Regular meet-ups, like those at PRCA events, were great for exchanging experiences, creating new opportunities, and supporting each other. I miss those interactions and the vibrant community that allowed people from all sectors and ages to come together. In fact, it's during one of those networking events where I first met Mark Pinsent, who offered me my first PR job, and even some of the guests on our podcast came from those gatherings. While I know things have changed, especially post-pandemic, I believe it's even more important now to revive some of those valuable rituals. So, consider this a casual check-in with my PR network in and around Munich: Would you be interested in regular meet-ups? I'm thinking monthly or less frequently, understanding how precious time is. No agenda, sign-ups, or memberships—just a chance to chat, have a drink, and share some laughs. Who's in? I plugged into The PR Hub Podcast this morning on my dog walk. The seasoned hosts, Adam Tuckwell and Jon Wilcox, are back for a third season, this time engaging in a thought-provoking discussion with Andy Barr about the operational and PR challenges faced by Co-op Live. The first comment includes a link to the show. It’s a great conversation that debates the story and addresses the issues. ✅ Venue naming deals work. Think Emirates and O2, but the Co-op’s deal for the new arena on the Etihad Campus in Manchester has dragged it into a reputation issue ❌ The Co-op has a longstanding issue addressing criticism over the price-gorging of staple items in the communities in which it operates 🤷 There’s a healthy dose of schadenfreude after venue operator Oak View Group bragged about building the biggest and best venue and calling out local grassroots venues 🫂 This is an operational issue, not a public relations issue, but the comms team could have helped sooner. It clearly hasn’t been involved in addressing the issues, until recently. Solidarity for the team 👍 Long-term damage will be limited, depending on how refunds are managed. The investors have deep pockets. Major infrastructure projects rarely open on schedule ⚠️ Lessons? Apply good practice: get ahead of the issue, engage all operational functions including legal, prepare management for media and public engagement, and look after your crisis team Thanks for the shoutout for mine, Sarah Waddington CBE CDir ChartPR and Richard Bagnall's advocacy for the role of comms in management. There's also an important reflection from Amanda Coleman's recent book about looking after the mental health and wellbeing of a crisis team.

A single mistake can have a significant impact, while a small step can lead to greatness. Senior management may only see the surface-level success of an event, but it's the behind-the-scenes efforts that truly make it shine. I recall my first event as a junior PR executive, where a seemingly minor oversight almost became a disaster. With just 20 minutes to go, we realized we forgot to buy a white marker to write on the black lanyards. This small omission threatened to disrupt the entire event, as it would be challenging to identify attendees without them. We managed to procure a white marker with great effort, saving the event from potential failure. This experience highlights the challenges PR professionals face in event planning. It's essential to appreciate the hard work of junior executives who work tirelessly to ensure every detail is in place. When an event succeeds, it's not just the visible aspects that deserve recognition, but also the unseen efforts that make it happen.

It has not been an easy year , by any measure, for Asia-Pacific PR firms — so it's worth shouting out: 😇 The agencies that put their heads above the parapet and spoke to us honestly about their performance, warts and all, in this year's Agencies of the Year competition. 🏅All of the firms that were subsequently shortlisted across the 14 Geographic and Specialist categories. The best firms, surely, prove their mettle under challenging conditions, and it seems unlikely that many have experienced a more testing period than the past 12 months.
