This Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to shed light on a topic that I feel is important to talk about : the mental health challenges faced by international students when coming to a new country.
The journey of international students is a rollercoaster of highs and lows, and it's crucial that we acknowledge and support those navigating this path. From battling homesickness and adapting to a new culture to the stress of job hunting and facing rejection, international students often shoulder a heavy burden.
The feelings of self-doubt following job rejections, the societal judgments and stereotypes encountered, and the potential scams they may fall victim to—all contribute to the complexity of their experience.
We must recognize the courage and resilience of international students who leave behind the comforts of home to pursue their dreams in a foreign land. They are more than just students; they are adventurers, explorers, and trailblazers.
However, their journey is not without its challenges. From the struggle to find affordable and safe housing to the harsh realities of social abuse and discrimination, international students face obstacles that can significantly impact their well-being and sense of belonging.
The financial burden of tuition fees, living expenses, and healthcare costs only adds to their stress and pressure. Accessing adequate healthcare services can be daunting, especially for those unfamiliar with the Canadian system. Navigating through complex bureaucracy and language barriers further exacerbates their challenges.
To all international students: You are not alone. Your journey is valid, and your dreams are worth pursuing. Remember, it's okay to pause and prioritize self-care. Reach out to your college's student support services and local non-profits—they are here to support you. You are valued, you are appreciated, and you deserve to thrive.
