How is campus engagement looking for employers in 2024? 🤔💭 Yesterday, our Employer Roundtable community joined our host Christos Orthodoxou in discussing the ROI of careers fairs, what's working (and what's not), and face-to-face vs. virtual campus engagement. Joined by representatives from Bloomberg, Virgin Media O2, Lloyds Banking Group, GKN Automotive, Sky, Transport for London, Schneider Electric, JLR, Amazon, Dentons, and more, some interesting stats came out of the session. When asked, "Why do you want to engage with university campuses?": 🎓 83% of attendees said 'graduate pipeline' 🛜 70% said 'internship/placement pipeline' 🤝 and 61% said 'ED&I' ('Apprentice pipeline' sat at 17%) Asked, "How are you planning to deliver campus engagement initiatives or programmes?": 👋 63% of attendees said 'Careers fairs' 🏛️ 58% said 'Campus presence' 🎭 and 53% said 'Societies' The group agreed that 'No applications' (63%) was the most effective way of measuring the success of campus engagement outreach initiatives in terms of ROI, followed by 'Diversity and inclusion' (21%) and 'No engagements' (11%). And when it came to delivering campus engagement activities, 60% of attendees were more inclined to 'Manage activities directly,' followed by 'A combination of direct activity and activity through 3rd parties' (33%), and 'Not sure/undecided' (7%). My team (Mary Margaret Harvey + Morganne Harrison) and I meet with countless students who express frustration about not hearing back from employers or having submitted several resumes without success. Whenever we hear this, our immediate question is, "What else have you tried, and who have you cultivated relationships with?" In the aftermath of the pandemic and in our increasingly digital world, there's a growing belief that we can achieve our goals on our own. But let me be clear—that couldn't be further from the truth. Success in today’s job market isn’t just about being qualified; it’s about forging authentic relationships and developing those soft skills and intangibles that set you apart. Our students are brilliant and talented, but so are the many others vying for the same opportunities. What will make you stand out? Your ability to build connections, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and show up in spaces where meaningful interactions can happen. Calling out to employers in the Scarborough, Whitby and Filey areas... North Yorkshire Council and the York & North Yorkshire Career Hub invites you to a special event on 5th June 2024 at the Scarborough Rugby Club. This is an opportunity to meet young people from local schools who have special educational needs or disability (SEND) who have an aspiration for paid employment, school careers staff and representative from supported employment providers. Why attend? The overwhelming majority of young people with SEND want to be in paid employment, but statistics show that they are significantly less likely to be in work and, on average, have much lower earnings long-term than their counterparts. At the same time, employers are looking to secure their talent pipelines and recruit individuals with the right skills and attitudes to become valuable employees. By engaging with young people with SEND you could be accessing a valuable pool of untapped talent. What are we asking from you?
