Wimbledon's elegantly dressed line judges might be losing their jobs. All matches at next year's championship will feature electronic line calling, the tennis tournament's organizer announced last week, upending 147 years of tradition. The change puts #Wimbledon in line with most other major pro #tennis events, which have used #technology to call lines for some time. Wimbledon tested the automated system last year and determined that it's accurate enough to fully deploy. Previously, Wimbledon let players "#challenge," or review, line calls made by humans a limited number of times per match, using an electronic system. Pro tennis players generally prefer electronic line calling because it makes fewer mistakes. Humans, understandably, have trouble seeing whether a serve hit at 130 mph is out by a millimeter or two. https://lnkd.in/eg8XQE5q.

Have you ever pondered the origins of the unique scoring system in #tennis and #padel? 🤔 Tracing back to the medieval era, when tennis, or its precursor #JeuDePaume, was a favored pastime among French nobility, we uncover a fascinating tale. Imagine a sun-drenched afternoon in 15th-century France, where King Henry V and the French Dauphin engaged in a spirited tennis match. Their scores were marked as 15, 30, and 45, a system that, while intriguing, has its roots firmly planted in medieval times. One widely accepted theory posits that players used clock faces to keep score, advancing the minute hand in 15-minute increments, leading to the familiar 15, 30, and 45 markers. However, the transition from 45 to 40 remains a historical enigma, potentially stemming from the need for a deuce and advantage system that didn't align with the clock face model. As you step onto the court, remember that each point you win is a testament to a rich legacy that stretches back centuries. From the grand pageantry of medieval France to the modern-day courts, the scoring system of tennis and padel carries the echoes of history. So, the next time you hear "15-Love" or "40-All," appreciate the fascinating journey behind those numbers. It's not just a game 🎾 it's a connection to the past, where every point tells a story.
